I just listened to this today for the first time in about a year.  Don't know why I haven't.  But I just got the Elements DVD and decided to listen to it again.  It was almost like hearing it for the first time.  So incredible, so moving, so brilliant.

It's about time this issue was thoroughly discussed....  ;)

I'm glad you said that Jules. I was just about to begin the discussion when I reminded myself that beginnings are really only endings, so I was able to bring the whole thing to a stop.

Hmmm. Or do I mean a start...?

I like the voice and the speach very much...Me and father laugh all the time "Margaret Thatcer" (BTW what's the real name of the person who speaks there) says "A-ha-ha-ha..."And that part of Amarok is awesome...

That's Janet Brown, the actress who used to provide the voice for the caricature puppet of Ms. Thatcher used in Spitting Image. I personally don't know much about Thatcher's politics [and I don't care about 'em either! :D], or about what exactly was Mike satirizing in that speech, but just for the way it's spoken I find it very, very funny. :)

So...what is worse? The Thatcher impression or the reaallly twee little girl with her bag of secrets?

What is nice though is that i can time my journey to work to run almost exactly in sync with Amarok. Thatcher comes in just after junction 23 on the M5 if there are no roadworks.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

Well, the Thatcher impersonation was actually the only part of Amarok I liked already at the very first listening. :)

Good call, Olrac. The girl is really a fairly silly trick ("silly" actually trying to be serious, not intentionally silly as the Thatcher bit), though to me, it's best best thing in the album.

Just listened to Amarok again and it had been a while, and it moves me from beginning to end and a new beginning! I don't think the Maggie Thatcher bit detracts from it in any way. Love the whole album.

Tracy.

Theres that magical guitar bit, will have to play it again and see when it comes in, will get back to you.

Amarok is a very unique album, even amongst Mike Oldfields albums, which says a lot, i don't think Maggie ruins the album, but it did find it weird when i first heard it, but like with most of Mike's idea's, with age, you see it's all good really.

Honestly thought Mike's dodgy drug experimentation era had caught up with him when I first heard this. But had to listen again straight away (as in all cases except voyager) and now is definately one of my favorites. I actually used one of the slightly brash sections to shut my noisy neighbours up at one stage - worked a treat - thanks Mike

Amarok #2 long overdue......

Thanks for the welcome Tubularbelle. Your name is definately streets ahead... Can't remember where I pinched mine from but was someone elses brain wave.

Haven't met too many people who are really into Oldfield so this forum is a really pleasant discovery (no reference intended).

Would be good to hear from you again sometime.

good night.
