I have some demo versions of some tunes found in a dusty old folder on my hard drive.....

Im currently working on an improved version of Belfast Streets... also there is an eerie soundtrack piece and 2 gentle ,very "warts n all " demos, 1 with female vocals that were litterally thrown down but i feel they have captured the delicate nature of the song...

Thanks for listening

Belfast Streets was an interesting song.  Would like to see it progress a bit quicker as you add on layers.  Like the last part best.

Enjoyed the soundtrack song (the name escapes me).  Easily envisoned another place in my mind...soothing.

"Real" was REAL!  Very raw emotion ozzing from this track.

Nice job!

"Belfast Streets" seemed very moving. It started off a bit like the opening theme of TB, but about one or two minutes when the strings came in, it became very beautiful and a lot more emotional, Nice work, Bleat!

By the way, I was very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I hope you and their family are all coping well.

Hi fastguy and SoimSandheaver, thanks for the responses,I appreciate you taking the time to listen to and comment on the tunes.

Belfast Streets was originally going to be a beat for hip hop hence the big beat to it......its funny you mention the TB thing cos i nearly ditched the whole track as I thought it might be a bit too close to Mike Oldfield.......its actually meant to sound like a piano sample on an old record player ..the version im working on sounds much more like what I originally planned anyhow....the last part and maybe the 2nd verse part will have some real guitar on it,when I get round to it at least!......I did it in a few hrs around the time that there was rioting going on near where my friend lived.....on 1 hand you have a beautiful city that is vibrant, modern and looking to the future and on the other there is still much bitterness and conflict between people there.....Its a hard thing to capture with music ..i did what I could.

Interesting saying the soundtrack cold as ice felt soothing,as it really gives me the creeps heh...its just a part of a much larger piece of music...I created the weird sounds on my Korg OASYS PCI ...sadly Ive sold it since then and am regretting it..ah well.

Theres like a million versions of Real ,but I found that one to be the most honest...the key of that version is slightly high for the vocalist which is a good thing as it gives her voice a delicate imperfect and honest feel...we did a version where the xfactor really comes out in her voice...it just wasnt right though.
Its a shame I did that on keyboard.....im thinking of doing a collaboration (maybe online) with a decent acoustic guitarist to really bring it to life at some point.

Soim, thanks for that...we were close and it will take a long time to get over if ever....music is a great healer though...

Cheers ,from Bleat

Bleat,

The soundtrack song I meant was Daisy Chains.  Truly relaxing for me.  I had the occasion to live in England for a couple years and oftened ventured into the countryside.  Your song brings me back there....

Bleat,

Just listened to Cold as Ice.  A strange combination of odd sounds but somehow it works for me.  Are these sounds from one soundcard?

Hi fastguy,

Ah I see ...DaisyChains pt 2,yep,that is meant to be relaxing, and reminiscent sounding.....a longing to be back in childhood when the sun always shined and not a care in the world sorta thing...hence its current title of DaisyChains..Again,its afunny thing you mention the English countryside as its original title was "English Rose". Pt 1 is more Pinkfloyd/Mike Oldfield sounding with soaring guitars, currently being refined.

Cold as Ice is part of a long Instrumental I work on now and again..its around 20 mins long at the moment and is my own take on the story of the Titanic, hence the 1912 thing...from construction to destruction.

That bit is set in the freezing Atlantic, from the perspective of being in the water...(maybe a penguin heh)...submerging and resurfacing......again I did what I could to acheive the visualisation in music.

The underwater weird effects were done on the Korg OASYS soundcard..I made them myself..like the creepy otherworldly metallic noises etc.....as were the echoing whale calls and the guitar sound. The bubbles I made from scratch on my Korg X3 synth, the water is actually an ocean sample run through a low pass filter to give the effect of submerging and surfacing. The ships horn was just a string sound from the X3,eq'd and pitch bent slightly...the sequence running in the background is from Native Instruments B4.

ps

The piano in Daisychains came from the soundcard as did the acoustic guitar sound in Real...the lyric is about the singers mum who died in a car accident when she was 12....its about how the years heal, the hurt and anger pass, and the realisation that the spiritual connection is eternal.....nice .

Bleat,

You did a commendable job with the guitar work on "Real" if that's played on a keyboard.

You previous response anticipates my next question.  Do you have the lyrics to share?

Hi Mike,
thanks for the replies to the tunes..it took a bit of work to get the keys right, its about as good as I could get it at the time.I did it verse by verse and adjusted some of the velocity and timing manually to give it a  "played" feel.

Here are the lyrics for "Real" :

Cold Decembers, come and go..while we're apart.
Who remembers little girls, with broken hearts?
Near to far...from a daughters arms.

Warm Septembers, have gone by..so many times.
I have tempered now,and I can breathe.......a sigh of life.

Beautiful eyes,wish you could see.
Beautiful life, I lead, this beauty is real.

(young girl) this is what I know I am...this is my precious life.

I climb the hills...that you once walked..
This is right to me..inside of me
I'll always be.......
.....your child
.....your child (young girl) your child...

Lyrics Copyright R.Grainger 2005.
