Yes, I know, i just started another topic, but I want to hear opinions on this one too.

Which lyrical track of any Mike Oldfield album do users think best conveys Mike's ability to write song lyrics. Do people actually like the hit "Moonlight Shadow" when compared to other tracks like "Heaven's Open", "Five Miles Out", "Holy" or even "Man in the Rain"? Which song do you think is good regardless of the lyrics, because of its sound, its rhythm and so on? On the other hand, which songs show poorer songwriting ability?

Funny, I actually think that "Man In The Rain" is the best of the three Moonlight-Shadowy-type songs (the other two being "Crime Of Passion" and "Moonlight Shadow"). I think the guitar solo on "Man In The Rain" is the best of the three, and the lyrics are much more personal to my mind, reflecting Mikes turbulent Ibiza period ("Living in a world that you can never be a part of, and nows the time to walk away, you can't stay no you can't stay...") and towards the end swelling with hope for the future ("Theres a new day dawning as the cold rain falls, and nows the time to walk alone..." "You're no loser theres still time to ride that train"). Its a great song for anyone who has been through the break up of a relationship, and it just struck a nerve with me the way Moonlight Shadow never could. (If you want to know more about what this song means to me check out the topic "Convertions" in the "Experiences" forum).

I think that given the right kind of inspiration, Mike can be a fantastic songwriter. I think the songs on "Islands" - Mikes greatest song based album, and one of his greatest albums period - atest to this. The title track is joyful and romantic and has some great use of imagery and metaphors ("When the nights on fire will you keep the candlelight burning?" "When you see one bird into the wind another ones turning and the two can fly much higher")and "When The Night's On Fire" is a tender, more restrained, and somewhat more articulate restatement ("When you see one bird, theres another one watching over, and the two can fly much higher"). "North Point" is eerie and mysterious and the admitedly abstract lyrics create this strange sense of foreboding. The lyrics to "Flying Start" reflect perfectly the price of success and the importance of reaching for your dreams. That said I found Magic Touch less impressive.

Other songs I think show his ability as a good lyricist/songwriter are "Holy", "Far Country", "See The Light", "To France", "Poison Arrows", "Talk About Your Life" "Bridge To Paradise", "Blue Night", "Heaven's Open". Also the rarer songs "Pictures In The Dark" and "Shine" show that Mike can be a great lyricist when he puts his mind to it.

Songs of his that work in spite of their lyrics are most of the stuff on "Discovery" (Crystal Gazing, Tricks Of The Light, Discovery, Saved By A Bell) namely because of the way they are sung and Mikeys guitar solos. Some of the lyrics on those songs seem rather simplistic to me. "Five Miles Out", the first time I listened to that song I couldn't understand what the hell Mike was going on about because of all the electronic distortion and I wished he hadn't used a vocoder at all, but I kept coming back to it and gradually figured out the words.

For examples of poor songwriting check out "Foreign Affair" one of the most irritating songs mike has ever concocted, it is so bloody repetitive. "Moonlight Shadow" is certainly overrated, for me it just sounds too cheerful for a song about death ("Crime Of Passion", even if it was such a blatant retread, sounded much more melancholy). "Family Man" would have been good were it not for the use of echo and water dripping sound effects.

And finally to conclude an already absurdly long post, here are some lyrics that set my teeth on edge:

"Good brother show me how to get home, I've been walking in the backyard of Satan"
from Runaway Son

"Speak to me like the very first speak"
from Innocent

"Sing to me like the very first sing"
from Innocent

"I'm half a crazy man, waiting for confirmation, signs keep changing and I need some more information"
from Tricks Of The Light

"Whos keeping secrets, I've got my spies, does anybody think we live in paradise"
from Discovery

"Saved By A Bell, suffer in hell, but you made it through so well"
from Saved by A Bell
(the bits about the stars and stuff was so beautiful and then THIS comes in and ruins the whole song)

"Wheres your mummy, wheres she gone"
"You dance Mummy! Don't think so!"
"Whos that Mummy, I don't know"
from Altered State
(the original version I found genuinely disturbing and it sent shivers down my spine, the one on TBII has me in hysterics, though maybe that was the point...)

"Love is a gift, and to take you so much"
from Magic Touch

"Mona Lisa you can stop searching, don't you know were not Virgin"
from Make Make

GOOD:
"You're a prisoner of the dark sky, the propeller blades are STILL
And the evil eye of the hurricane's COMING IN NOW FOR THE KILL!!!!"
(That always gives me the creeps!)
NOT SO GOOD:
"We are islands... We are islands ... We are islands... "

Apart from FMO, about which I perfectly agree with Carsten, I think one of the finest lyrical efforts to be found on any of Mike's albums is the part with lyrics from Orabidoo - the 'Ireland' bit. This is also an amazingly beautiful peace of music. It's really what Ireland is like IMO. And I've often wondered whether this was written by Mike, as Orabidoo is credited as a group composition and this bit, to me, doesn't sound typically Mike-like. Does anyone know about this?

FMO credits some other musicians, and The Complete (LP) has a little note about each album and notice this fact. I'll post more soon about this. Mainly it says that, with this album, Mike had enough thrust in his musicians to let them compose part of the album. But it doesn't tell us what did they compose : the pattern of their own instrument on a Mike base or arrengements or lyrics or some part of the main melody ?

I should have posted this ages ago, but anyway:

One of the most annoying lyrics Mike has wrote, though not his worst, is part of Moonlight Shadow, with one of the daftest lines in the world (well, maybe not the world, but pretty daft anyway):

"Four AM in the morning".

Huh? I thought AM was in the morning. He can't mean radio (unless it's one where you can watch visions forming), so he must mean Four in the morning in the morning. I think.

Anyway, just had to share that with you.

You're perfectly right, Tim - I thought about that, too... it's actually pretty stupid... but who cares? wink
And I just saw I made a cool typo in my above post - did anyone spot it?

Truely, I like the lyrics of the "Horse Song". Why?
Because the words are very honest, spontaneous, but also simple.

"I´d rather be with you than flying through the space..."

This and the whole song always makes me reflect on simple but essential things in life, which I often forget to be proud of and appreciate.

Please don´t laugh about me... rolleyes

So you like the Horse Song, Dervish. Well...

So do I biggrin! I think it's one of Mike's best songs (I think I put it in my Top 10 in another topic). I love the tranquility and the simpleness of the piece, and the vocals are good too.

We've all agreed it's "chaos", haven't we wink?

Of course it isn't - the line is "Some maim cows"...I thought it was obvious... wink

I like that song as well...Like everyone has said already, there's a great honesty and simplicity to it. Leslie Penning, who introduced Mike to horse riding was apparently incredibly touched by the song, feeling it very accurately described the feeling of their horse riding outings.

I happen to like the song Heaven's Open as well...I'll probably get lynched by someone for that wink. It seems to express how Mike felt about leaving Virgin...I don't know for sure that it does, of course wink

I didn't write, when I started, the song lyrics that I like the most, so I'd better do that now:

(in no order)

On Horseback
Five Miles Out
Heaven's Open

All good, IMHO, and shouldn't make anyone get lynched for liking them wink

Why would anyone maim a toy? (Or was Mike predicting punk?) wink

Hey Tim,

Yeah, it is funny about the "Four AM in the morning" part of the song. People say it all the time though. I dont see the point in AM and PM, lol.  :p It would have dragged on a bit if he just wrote "Four in the morning." would be like singing: "Fourrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in the morning."
Anyway, just thought i would share that with you all. lol.

Cheers

I love To France.  I think it was a development of Mike covering Arrival in that he ended up writing a song in the Abba style.  Great pop song.  That and Moonlight Shadow are my favourite MO pop songs.

'Holy' is one of my favs, altough the music doesn't quite do justice to the words. Another one - and I agree with Jules and Megz above - is 'To France'... I like the way it creates a story out of history. :)

Hey Tim

I doubt Tim is reading actually - he made that post three years ago!

One of my favourites of Mike's songs is Pictures In The Dark - I think it's the fat vocal harmonies which particularly attract me to it, though the song in general appeals to me.

My favourite song of Mike's will probably always be Heaven's Open. I love the backing music: it's so positive, joyous and uplifting. It gives me a boost every time I listen to it. Mike certainly has the ability to write great songs, and he has done that quite a lot: an album of Mike Oldfield songs would be a pretty good album. OK, so the lyrics don't always live up to the music, but I can usually forgive that.

I've never thought of Mike as a "Songwriter"as such, more a composer who uses words,i kind of think he does'nt care to much for lyrics,he's no Mark Knopfler in that way!!!,but some of Mike's songs have worked really well, and i do like them a lot,"Moonlight Shadow"of course is a classic song, but i also tend to like some of the songs that most people don't like.
