Not a big fan of soundcloud:
- the waveform ruins the 1st (and only, 99% of the time) listening: you know when the buildup is coming
- the waveform ecourages to comment on specific moments rather than the whole

youtube seems to generate many more listenings. I guess soundcloud is more "professional" oriented, to share amongst musicians. They don't seem to do much to attract an audience contrary to youtube.

I agree that Soundcloud is much more a site for musicians - I also use Reverbnation.

I keep Soundcloud for Previews or rough versions (and sometimes finished tracks too) but on Reverbnation I only ever put up finished tracks.

I love soundcloud. It's my "harddrive" when I work in different studios, when I collaborate with others. Plus it lets me share music in lossless quality on facebook and on my blog. The graphic representation is perfect for those purposes.
For "final product" I use bandcamp.

Don't know much about Reverb Nation except that it's a stupid name. What "nation"? Any special advantages with Reverb Nation?

I think it is great. You don't have to watch the waveform while listening if you don't want, and most people let you download their tracks, so you can listen offline. It is possible to give general comments, not just on particular parts. I think it is great to be able to comment details, which is really hard if you cannot point at it.

Hi,

I'm not convinced that soundcloud is 'lossless' because my uploads sound different to me after they've performed their 'transcoding' process.

Re: ReverbNation... what's in a name? Is there really a camp where Bandcamp members meet? What I like about ReverbNation (and this is not in comparison to any other site) is that you have unlimited uploads (although there is an individual file size limit), unlimited playlists, player widgets to embed on other sites, mail shots, and reasonably good stats too.

Cheers,
Terry.

Signed up to reverbnation. All I'm getting is people pretending to be fans of me to sell me their stuff.

I don't think the streaming version of what you get on soundcloud is lossless either. However, the downloads seem to be since they have the same size as the original uploaded file.

The soundcloud downloads are lossless. They claim so themselves and I can't tell any difference from the original .wav after I have up- and downloaded it. Same size, same sound.

I wasn't saying that my dislike for reverb nation based on a stupid name is in any way justified. But I still don't get it...reverb? A land of reverb? I suppose bandcamp could be a place for bands to stay (on the web), which makes sense.
From what I hear it seems to be a good service, but I really get what I need from bandcamp and soundcloud.

I love Soundcloud... it's the best site for Musicians I know of... I find it very user friendly. It's not perfect but the support team are excellent! I do have one issue with an asshole however who favourites every track I release... so again it's not without its problems...

The alternatives are sites like Reverbnation (not bad, but you get  other artists following you who are not really in your own genre) more interested in you listening to them than they are of you!

Soundclick I also use but the interface is poor and difficult to navigate around in the admin area. It's also very American with loads of ads over it... However, I've joined a little group now on Soundclick where we have song writing competitions which really pushes you to a deadline...

I'd love a site more oriented for live performances, and with a good discovery/related to system. YouTube seems to be the closest to my ideal software.

What I'd add to YouTube is multi track video: showing you playing one track, the other tracks below it, multiple angles (for people with the equipment), etc. Everybody loves the Blue Peter video. Mike should sponsor such a software. The (motivated) community could even replace some of the tracks, or play along some, mix them differently, etc.

Who cares about seeing a flattened sound wave, really?

Isn't that what you'd call "a fan"? :-)

They seem to confuse sounds with tracks. Sometimes they call it a sound, sometimes a track. That could explain the weird sound waves all over, they make sense for an individual sound, but not much for a mixed down track. Maybe the site was designed for sounds, and they are changing to tracks?
