We all listen to music for many different reasons. Within the music, each instrument makes it's own characteristic sound and a collection of organised sounds will somehow have meaning for us. Sounds are all around us, everywhere. Not long ago I was out walking with two of my children one evening near where I live. It was winter time & frosty & very still. We came to a frozen pond surounded by trees. Not only did it look eerily beautiful in the silvery light but we had the most brilliant time skimming stones on the ice. We really loved this, & it was as much for the sound of the stones skidding across the frozen water as for the sight of them whizzing in all directions. It was to be one of the strangest, most compulsive sounds I've ever heard, as if it was both from the past and the future simultaneously. It kind of cracked and then whistled, I think the trees sort of trapped the sound not allowing it to fade away. It was amazing. We have had a mild winter here so not too many frosty cold days. I'll have to wait a while before I hear it again.

It got me thinking though about sounds generally. Other sounds, everyday sounds that I unconsciously love. What it is I like about them I can't say, I just like them...

~flames crackling in a log fire, or a bonfire
~a skylark singing early on a summer morning high above the fields
~a cat purring
~a pencil across a sheet of paper
~wine pouring into a glass
~glass shattering ( strange one that )
~scissors cutting hair
~the silence outside on Christmas Day

And sounds that set me on edge, ie those I can't bear are

~ alarm clocks or alarm bells of any kind
~ropes on masts of boats that tap away erratically in the breeze
~very strident female voices
~finger nails on painted walls ( ahhh!;)
~wood pigeons

Any one got any more?

Cool thread! Let's see if I can think of some...

Good sounds:
- A fan humming and whirring quietly, especially when I go to sleep on a hot night;
- Cars passing by on a highway (not during very busy times...);
- Sea waves as a background noise;
- ... yep, I definitely can't think of too many. :)

Bad sounds:
- Whistling and humming (Not any whistling or humming, but... argh, some people somehow manage to whistle and/or hum in an incredibly monotonous, dull, inexpressive manner that it's maddening - and I have examples of that in my house);
- General repetitive sounds produced by a person (wiggling on a squeaky chair, for example);
- Alarms (especially car alarms: dreadful! );
- Certain telephone rings (such as one we have on the place I work);
- Water dripping on a noisy surface;
- Dogs barking insistently;

Yes... I'm easily irritable. Might be a psychological thing, I dunno.

Good sounds:

Wind in trees or long grass
Waves breaking on shingle
Emilia Fox's voice, reading an audiobook
Folding or unfolding paper

Bad sounds

Someone else's TV or radio

Good Sounds

Kicking up fallen leaves in the wood
Crackling flames in an open fire
Feet on virgin fallen snow
waterfalls, streams, brooks , rivers
Fish splashing in an aquarium or pond
The sea crashing against rocks, or breaking on shingle
Songbirds, often hear a chaffinch call
Ringtones of old 70's dial phones
www.uk-telephones.com/Application/Products/Teleph/tel4GB.asp has the sound of the ringtone on this page too
Wind in the trees
The whistle of steam locomotives or traction engines
The sound of my car shifting up a gear, love the "growly" sound
 :)
Bad Sounds

Power tools , weird I don't mind if I'm using a drill to fix shelves etc to a wall, but if I'm hearing someone elses power tools I find it can disturb my peace. I guess as a female I find doing my own DIY quite liberating :) .
Strimmers ( just hate that sound)
Car alarms
Virtually any alarm bell, however my alarm clock going off if I've something to look forward to is quite pleasant
:)

GOOD SOUNDS

my kids laughing in the back garden
Harvey Cat purring on my lap
The "psshtt" sound of a cold beer can being opened
My wife shouting "everyone sit at the table" when Sunday Roast is being served, and the sound of running feet from all over the house/garden
Rain on the Conservatory (garden room) roof, when I'm safe and warm inside
A really good thunder storm
Waves (and seagulls)
The hard drive whirring into action on boot-up
The sound of ropes on masts in a harbour (sorry Bee - I've always lived near the sea)

BAD SOUNDS

Teenage kids screeching in the park at night
Car alarms
Morning alarm clock
The thud of a football against a wall (always fear the wall will fall down)
"last orders please"
Nokia default ring-tone (Tarreaga?)
"your call is important to us, we will answer your call soon"
Dripping water taps

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

How could I forget the sound of the sea? I do love it too, but I also love coming away and leaving it there, I must be an inlander!!

Tuneless humming grates on me too. Do they really think that's how the music is? I cannot sing at all and I would never subject anyone to my voice if I had even the faintest respect for them!!

The unfolding paper is an intersesting one and one we are sadly hearing less and less in these computer filled days. And to hear the letterbox and the sound of post arriving is wonderful, especially if it is a handwritten letter. Not so keen on the bills.

Snow underfoot is good too, I agree, a lot of fun, but not too deep, it slows you down. I used to love jumping in snow filled ditches.

And anything where the children are concerned is brilliant yes. But I'm disliking the sound of the basket ball slamming into the dining room window in quiet, peaceful moments. Fortunately no glass broken yet, but they have been warned!!

Good Sounds
- Waves crashing against rocks and settling on the shore
- Something metallic hitting a glass to produce a "dong" sort of noise - they make me laugh
- Morning Birdsong (preferrably seagulls)
- Flowing rivers and waterfalls
- Leaves rustling in a moderate breeze
- Silence

Bad Sounds
- Alarms (Cars, Smoke Alarms, Tram signals etc.)
- The School Bell
- Whistles (as in the sort used in football)
- People blowing their noses very loudly
- Girls screaming
- Cats wailing at night (I've had many a sleepless night thanks to this!;)
- Feedback
