I was just wondering what peoples opinions were with regards to the best source of Mp3's out there on the web? AudioGalaxy was fantastic before its sad demise last year and nothing seems to have replaced it in terms of sheer quantity of choice, it had everything. I've got Kazaa but I'm not very impressed by it, you can only really get hold of mainstream stuff and even then it's quite often slow downloading. I've not tried WinMX, is it any good? Are there any others worth investigating. Cheers.

WinMX is good for 'common' stuff, not for rare stuff. Rare stuff is owned by few people, and all the files often have huge queues.

Yeah that seems to be the case with Kazaa as well. You rarely had problems getting obscure stuff from AudioGalaxy, I guess it must have worked in a different way. I got some fantastic Mike rarities from AudioGalaxy with no problem.

Personally I think Kazaa (especially KazaaLite) is great! I don't know what you mean by 'mainstream stuff', but I think I've found almost everything from Mike Oldfield.
And concerning the speed it's best to search by user: search for some less known tracks, download everything (also tracks who are exactly the same! ) , then spot the user with the fastest connection and search by that user. Often you'll get some files you need!

Don't know wether this is usefull for you, but it works for me  ;)

That sounds like a good way to get stuff if you've got broadband or some other fast internet connection, unfortunately I'm still on a slow 56k dial up modem though I am seriously thinking about upgrading to broadband.

Compared to AudioGalxy Kazaa does seem to have a pitifully small selection of stuff, it may have all the standard releases by Mike but I've yet to find rare bootlegs, demos, etc all of which you could get off AG no problem, though admittedly I'm quite new to Kazaa so maybe I'll need to search more. AG was also laid out better it was very simple to find stuff and also what your chances of easily downloading it were. At its hight AG had about 9000 possible Mike Oldfield downloads so you were alway's sure of getting what you wanted including ultra rare stuff.

I'm using Kazaa for some time now and I agree that it's good for mainstream stuff. But sometimes you can find rarer stuff like old Pink Floyd videos and Rick Wakeman stuff (the latter is not easily found in music shops). Sometimes you have to be a bit lucky I guess. I have tried WinMx but I find it way worse than Kazaa. Then there is Direct Connect which works with communities who have their own demands for joining (like minimum amount of files sharing). But that's also mainly mainstream stuff and it's not so easy to find files.

BTW what's the difference between Kazaa lite and the regular Kazaa? Is one better than the other?

I've just downloaded and started using WinMX, it does seem to have come up with slightly more hits for some of the stuff I've searched for, Mike, Led Zepplin and some other less well known stuff. But again like Kazaa the more obscure the music the less likely you are to actualy getting hold of it, even though its listed. I don't know how AudioGalaxy got round this problem but it did, I suppose that was maybe one of the reasons it was closed down  it just became to popular and easy to use.

To Bubular:
The difference between Kazaa and KazaaLite is that KazaaLite doesn't include spyware and adware. That means: no annoying ads (nor popups nor banners, so it won't slow down your computer) and you're sure nobody can see what you're downloading.
It also includes some nice extra's such as a little speedup program, which helps you to hurry a download in Kazaa (doesn't work in the latest version though, I think).
If you're interested: KaZaaLite

To Toby:
I really should get a better connection if your intention is to download music. It's a real hell without one!  :)

Thanks Music, the ancient language... I have downloaded KazaaLite and installed it, but boy had I trouble with it! When it was installed and I had it run I couldn't get connected. So I decided to uninstall it and reinstall the regular Kazaa. There the same problem and what's more I couldn't get connected to the internet altogether! Only after uninstalling and resetting my firewall-settings I got my internet connection back. Then after installing KazaaLite again it finally worked.
I never trusted Kazaa and I actually know a guy who had to reformat his computer because Kazaa messed up his system. Well I am glad that I am rid of it!

I think the problem with all these file sharing systems is that you can never really guarantee what you're downloading is free of bugs. When I first started using AudioGalaxy last year my computer started a nasty habit of rebooting itself for no apparant reason, a problem I've never really gotton rid of.
