So, it's your first post here. It's always good to see new people around here (this is another way of saying: don't be scared and/or angry if people start banging on your head around here - you'll have to get used to it. ).
Well, me... I'm not posting this here just to disagree. I'm just realising that, after all this time, I don't know if it's necessary for anyone to stand up for Mike. Not that I'm diminishing anyone's devotion for his music. I just think that, after all, this is just personal opinion, and it isn't affecting Mike music. He has been making music HE feels like doing for quite some time, and he has openly admitted it. I don't think he's really listening to our opinions/reviews, mostly because he doesn't WANT to (and I respect that). The vast majority of fans voted, a few years ago, that they'd rather see a long composition from Mike rather than several small ones. We got Light And Shade. He has been following his own paths and doing whatever the Hell is feels like doing. He chose this. So, why does anyone really need to defend him? Mike has asked for all of this. It's the way things go. Our words aren't doing many changes, after all.
The point that gets me is that, very often, both sides of the discussion (i.e. yeasayers and naysayers) tend to simplify things a bit. I don't think the question is disliking the album because it's something different, or because everyone dislikes Mike's new albums. It's more complex than that. I have my own reasons for having my feelings towards the album (both positive and negative), and they're not that simple. Likewise, I know other people's feelings towards the album are complex, too. That's why conversation grows: curiousity is the key. Knowing the intricacies of the others' opinions is what makes the whole thing work. I could write on and on about my feelings and reasons, but I won't make your eyes tired of reading here.
One last specific point: not to be mean, but that attitude of "Mike's still better than whatever crap is going on now" reminds me of you know who? Simpsons fans. Both the Simpsons and Mike have sufferent dramatic declines in quality in my opinion, and many fans have similar reactions: "The Simpsons may not be very good now, but they're still MUCH better than anything else going on TV". It's natural: when you've been living The Simpsons for years, it's easy to believe that. But someone in the outside may firmly believe that, say, The Backyardigans are ten times better than recent Simpsons seasons. Does that change anything? Not much. It all depends on where you're coming from. So... eh, whatever. I'm just glad that, for every Light And Shade that pops in my way, there's one Clube Da Esquina... so it all compensates.
Thanks for your attention.
