Does anyone have any more info on how "Stars End"(or part of)came to be recorded at Barking Town Hall, with the aid of "The Manor Mobile" back in Aug 74,and why the decision to use this location?
I'm very familiar with this town which is close to the Essex/East London borders (from City of London direction, you come to Manor Park, then Ilford, with Barking being next to Ilford).Thought I'd mention this as many board members are from other countries, are familiar with Hornchurch as being a former home of M.O,and these places are not very far away from there.

It was because of the acoustics, which are good for orchestral recordings. Bernard Herrmann is said to have liked it a lot as a recording venue, and so his scores for films like Psycho and Moby Dick were made there. It's been used as a venue for quite a number of classical recordings.

The Orchestral Tubular Bells was also recorded there, again using The Manor Mobile (which was Virgin's mobile recording facility, run by Phil Newell).

That's so interesting to learn many thanks for the info Korgscrew. The many times I've walked past Barking Town Hall, obviously unaware that such exiting things went on there!
Some close relatives of mine are in the area so next visit, will have to go check out the acoustics for myself(out of sight & range of general public ,mind ) :O
