I know. I just heard about it like twenty minutes ago. I went onto one of my favourites (imdb.com), and to find out that a stingray had killed him. I was in shock! A popular guy and one that I'm sure will be missed by many.

Yes, that's very sad indeed. I've also heard about it just few minutes ago. I enjoyed his programs. I wonder what happened, because he was very experienced professional and I'm sure he didn't take unneccessary risk.

I heard it this morning. I was really really shocked and sad. The earth has lost a great nature and animal lover. Rest in peace.  :/

Err... My twisted friend just sent me this text...

"When asked about his favourite boyhood TV programs, Steve Irwin said " Thunderbirds was great but "Stingray will always have a place deep in my heart""
Steve would laugh at that! R.I.P.
Sad loss...

Pathetic really.

I don't think it's pathetic, just not a particularly good joke. Not because of the morbid nature or anything, just 'cause it's a particularly bad pun. ;)

I'm prepared to be shot down for this but I really don't care about Steve Irwin's death at all, he died doing what he loved which was in its essence a pretty stupid thing to do anyway. He would have been a bit silly to have not seen that one coming at some point (well, maybe not a ray, but something killing him 'cause he got too close).

Besides, my grandpa died the same day, I'm dealing with that instead.

Well I thought iw was pretty bad taste the joke.
Only 3 people have been killed by stingrays and he wasen't provoking it or annoying it. Something like this was bound to happen but he's been dealing with animals all his life so he knew what he was doing. THe guy died and all people can do is call him stupid and that he deserved it. not particulary on this forum but on others. give the guy a break.

he was a cultural ambassador for oz, and a great naturalist, ok a bit ott at times, but the world loved him for that, he brought the natural world to a whole new generation, and invoked an interest in the young, and old alike, his legacy will carry on through the people he inspired.

R.I.P Steve

I can't believe people in the media are criticising him for provoking or teasing the ray and other animals and I have seen a quote from Germaine Greer saying that 'he deserved it.' What a disgusting thing to say. People are debating whether he provoked the ray or not as they are normally placid animals and he obviously got too close, and for sure no one should blame the ray. If I hear of rays being killed because of this I will be livid, but people who are actually trying to say that he provoked animals just for the sheer entertainment of it are way off base because he was a conservationalist and an avid environmentalist and it was his 'get too close to the animals antics' that earned him the money to do his good work. Yes he used a strange approach but that's what made him popular. The saddest thing is that this has happened at a time when he was still recovering form bad press of the past, the baby in the crocodile enclosure incident and getting too close to seals and whales in the antartic recently. But for anyone to not simply feel grief for the loss of this young and courageous man and his family is completely out of line. Certainly he was foolish and that has cost him his life, isn't that enough, without his memory being tainted by harsh comments and I'm not talking about this site, who cares what people say amongst friends, I'm talking about what the media chooses to air. I mean who gives a F__K what Germaine Greer thinks for Christs sake!

Yes, it makes me mad too TubularBelle. Steve Irwin was a great guy, and he's never going to be back. It's a great loss...
