To my (cloth) ears, most Steve Morse's solos on the last Deep Purple album effort, named 'Bananas', do not sound DeepPurplian at all - they sound Oldfieldian. :) Sorry to all Deep Purple fans out there who think I might be saying some blasphemy, but the fluidness, the tone, the speed [yes!! :)] and the overall feel of most solos on the album sound to me like they have nothing to do with Ritchie Blackmore/Deep Purple in general, and more than a little bit to do with Mike Oldfield. :)

Agree? Disagree? Please do, but tell me why. ;) And sorry for my usual abundance of emoticons.

I totaly disagree simply because there is no way a band "has" to sound like.
Continuing this way of "doesn't sound like" there would be a bunch of M.O. albums which -IMHO- don't sound like him....
Additionaly Mike O. isn't the founder or inventor of anything which he has a patent specification for.
And - why should the solos have anything to do with Mr. Blackmore, who left the band 10 years ago. Aren't they allowed to develop further ?

As I often do in my posts, I'm mostly referring other people's opinions, not entirely my own ones. When people talk about a 'historical' band, they often refer to their sound, i.e. to how they have sounded like during most (if not all) or their career - their 'classic' sound. ;)  And some DP fans I know liked 'Purpendicular' mainly because it sounded just like the 'classic' Blackmore-based Deep Purple; they didn't like 'Abandon' because it was way heavier. And, judging from reviews on DP fan sites, there are some fans who don't have a very high opinion of 'Bananas' because it does not sound like the 'classic' DP. ;)
I didn't say that Mike was the inventor of anything, yet some people do recognize that he's got a trademark sound, which is (always IMHO) very close to the sound of many solos on 'Bananas'. And yeah, of course it's okay for DP to develop beyond Blackmore, but Steve Morse should (at least) sound like Steve Morse - I have a solo album of his where he sounds completely un-Oldfieldian. I wonder why he didn't play like that on 'Bananas'. :)

And BTW, continuing with the resemblances, the track "Contact lost" on 'Bananas' sounds to me like Gary Moore - its first four notes are identical in tone, sound and duration to the first four notes of "One day". :)

why should he ?

solo-or-sideproject-albums are in made cases made 'cause the artist wants to do his kind of music without the band-attitude behind any conceptual thingie.

about the rest of your posting: well, if the "fans" can't deal with a band's sound changing, that's simply life.

Yeah. Or, like French people put it, c'est la vie. :)
