As I often do in my posts, I'm mostly referring other people's opinions, not entirely my own ones. When people talk about a 'historical' band, they often refer to their sound, i.e. to how they have sounded like during most (if not all) or their career - their 'classic' sound. And some DP fans I know liked 'Purpendicular' mainly because it sounded just like the 'classic' Blackmore-based Deep Purple; they didn't like 'Abandon' because it was way heavier. And, judging from reviews on DP fan sites, there are some fans who don't have a very high opinion of 'Bananas' because it does not sound like the 'classic' DP. I didn't say that Mike was the inventor of anything, yet some people do recognize that he's got a trademark sound, which is (always IMHO) very close to the sound of many solos on 'Bananas'. And yeah, of course it's okay for DP to develop beyond Blackmore, but Steve Morse should (at least) sound like Steve Morse - I have a solo album of his where he sounds completely un-Oldfieldian. I wonder why he didn't play like that on 'Bananas'.
And BTW, continuing with the resemblances, the track "Contact lost" on 'Bananas' sounds to me like Gary Moore - its first four notes are identical in tone, sound and duration to the first four notes of "One day".
