Hello Everyone,

Link ("Surrounded By Spirits" is at the top of the list)

Newly updated as of June 15! See post further down this thread.

also... new: Ogg Version Surrounded By Spirits (ogg)
(Angelfire sux... please ignore the ad on the top of the page.)

It's a sort of ambient-feeling instrumental rock "song," with an open sort of U2/Andy Summers feel. Mostly guitars (electric, acoustic, bass, VG-8) with just a tiny bit of singing... the drums were programmed in Cubase.

I hope you all enjoy it.

excellent, well mixed, and very well balanced track to my ears:)

I like the lead! it sounds nicely clear:)
but to me...the singing is...well just some points down (sry)
I also quite like the distorded lead though I worried about that a bit:)

A nice track. An improvement from the demo you sent me. Composition-wise I can't find any areas for improvement. It has great potential

Perhaps you could tinker around with effects a bit. I thought the first lead guitar entry had too much delay that lead to an unfocused sound. The rhythm guitar parts sounded OK though

I think the vocals could be multitracked with more overdubs so that they sound a bit more pad-like, but not too synthetic

I'm not sure if the title's a bit too dark-sounding. Maybe it doesn't match the feel of the music that well, but I like it

A very well produced track, you just keep getting better!

Can't say I had a problem with the vocals. Certainly not Maggie though!

i don't like the vocals either, but overall the song is good, i liked it. some more solos would be nice though.

and i noticed some ugly mp3 artifacts, whatever encoder it is you're using i suggest you switch to lame.

edit: oh, and i agree with jammer about that delay at the beginning, it doesn't sound very good.

I had to listen to it in lo-fi, because the hi-fi stream would stop every 20 seconds and buffer for 1 minute. Goddammit, but in the end, that's a very good track for the kind of feel it transmits. It leaves a spacey feel, and is well written. Great guitar playing, great sound, and it's a good thing you didn't double-speed the vocals or something. :D Overall, I'd be proud of myself if I had recorded that song. :)

UPDATE: Ooo, OGG! Shiny! I'll try the new version. Expect a new comment soo.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I've updated the Soundclick site with a new mix of the instrumental. I've redone the vocals, and tweaked the eq and levels just a tiny bit so that the lead guitar parts and the acoustic guitar strumming part stand out a bit more. As for the delay... I'm a bit torn on that, since I'm a big fan of the effect, and also because it's a pedal effect, so I'd have to redo the entire lead part, which I don't have the time to do just now, and it's something I'm fairly happy with at the moment.

As for the encoder I'm using, it's already WinLAME, but Soundclick only allows 128 kbps files. To that end, I've put up an ogg version on my personal webspace on angelfire. It's finicky, but I hope it works! In any case, the new mp3 file should still sound better than the old one.

I'm glad you think I'm getting better at this... I guess that's what happens when I keep at it!

Very nice indeed
I wont repeat the rest
Really like the acoustic entrance before 3rd min arrives.
I'd make the whole tracl abit shorter by repeating less times.
Really love dthe vocals. and I would also try to apply the melody idea which is sung by the vocals to the other parts of the track.
good job! :)

Comments? Well, firstly, I'm glad that you put the OGG available for download, because I finally could listen to the song in full quality without having one minute gaps every 20 seconds. :D And what can I say? To give you a slight relief, I had no problems with the stereo-delayed effect. It was atmospheric, and was never detracting. It could have been a bit more subtle, but it works, and I liked it. Really. And well? Mostly what I said already: well written stuff, wonderfully performed, solid guitar work... simply great stuff, definitely a track that I'd insert into a compilation CD. :) Great work. I'll keep it on my computer here, and might pop it on Winamp often.
