1. You buy Infinity Subwoofers for your car's speaker systems, so you can show how complex the drum rudiments are to your drummer friends.

2. You've memorized all instruments that Mike Oldfield plays.

3. You are a devoted PC fan, but you go buy a Mac just so you can watch the parts on The Song of Distant Earth.

4. You arrange Mike Oldfield music and propose it to your High School Band director for it be used in Field shows.

5. You explain to everyone, that Mike did not write a soundtrack to the Exorcist movie, They just used bits and samples of it.

6. "(Speak) Vision of the Night" is a very moving and tragic song, and you let no one tell you otherwise.

7. You bring the TB3 and TMB to all dance clubs you go to, and ask the DJs to play Far Above the Clouds and The Millenium Bell, Instead of any music by Korn and Limp Bizkit.

8. You've got into several fights just because of the music of Mike Oldfield.

9. When it comes down to picking which song is better, You choose Shine with Jon Anderson, instead of One by Metallica.

10. You know you could stay up all night writing lists like this.

Heres some of mine, please add to the list!

1. You look for MO album abbreviations in license plate numbers, e.g. FMO 846
INC 231

2. You have a vanity license plate that says "amarok." *I* wouldn't know anyone like that (((-;

3. Your kids have "bring your favorite music day" in music class. Instead of letting them choose what they want, you bribe them to take some Mike Oldfield.

4. You ask your child's orchestra teacher if you can play his tubular bells.

5. You bake cookies shaped like tubular bells and bring them to work, to sabbats, to your children's school. None are ever available for home consumption, because, well, everyone in your household already knows about tubular bells. Why bother?

6. You are asked to drive in the local parade, and you blare Mike Oldfield's music.

7. You're on your first holiday to the UK. Most people would visit London, Stonehenge, etc. Your focus is getting to Hergest Ridge.

8. As you age, you don't become "over the hill." You become "over the Ridge."

9. You refer to various herbs as the Hergest greens.

10. When asked if there is a god or goddess of the tubular bells, you reply, "Mike Oldfield."

You might be a die-hard Mike Oldfield fan...

1) ..if you postpone important things because you can't stand to stop one of Mike's albums in the middle!

2) ..if you use his album titles for passwords to private chat rooms.

3) ..if you consider making Tubular Web your startup page.

4) ..if you can't log onto the net once without checking Dark Star or Tubular Web for news.

5) ..if you use Hans Claesson's wallpapers on your computer exclusively!

6) ..if you openly admit to being a MO fan living in the United States.

7) ..if you admit to liking Heaven's Open, Earth Moving or Discovery.

8) ..when you'd rather listen to a MO album while playing a game rather than listen to the game's music.

9) ..if you sent any email to Sonic Reality.

10) ..if you've ever saved up for an extended period of time for one of Mike's CD's.

11) ..if you're willing to use a credit card over the net just to get Sonic Reality first.

ALL OF THE ABOVE, plus:
At the concert in Bonn/Germany (June '99), I watched the following scenes:
- Some guy in the audience carried a bag full of vinyl-record sleeves. Every time Mike started a new song, that guy quickly pulled out the appropriate album sleeve and waved it over his head!
- A girl had a piece of silk (or something), which she had colored in a TB pattern. There was something wrapped into it, probably a present. The girl threw that bag onto the stage, right upon Mike's notes lying on the floor! All Mike said was "My notes!"

You are a die-hard MO fan if you do things like that or report about them on the web tongue.

Wow! That reminds me: At Wembley, there was a young woman who had a tubular bell tattooed on her back, and a guy with one tattooed on his arm. I've not yet had the courage, but soon.......

Things that i have done that make me an olfield fanatic...

1. If someone starts sentences that can be turned into oldfield lyrics, I complete the sentence...
e.g. "I need you on my side" reply: "when there's a crises"
"you can't stay" reply "your no loser, theres still time to ride that train"

^ I actually do this!! I am sooo sad!

2. I wrote out the entire story from the inside of the amarok booklet and Emailed it to my entire address book.

3. I painted a very large mural of the 'Crises' cover on my wall.

4. I bought Carrie Melbournes album, just because she played bass and stick on the Then and now tour. (its really good though)

5. My Father knows Maddy Prior, as we live close to her (she is the vocalist on Haiawatha), and when I met her I nearly burst into tears.

6. I made minidisc copies of every official oldfield album, and i made two compilations of rare tracks, just so i could listen to them on the move in my walkman. (I even did Earth moving!! ughhhhh)

7. I bought Voyager, Tubular bells 3, guitars and TMB on their day of release.

8. I played 'Muse' for My GSCE Performance exam.

9. I have the tour program for the Tubular Bells 2 20th anniversary tour Framed.

And thats what makes me an Oldfield Fanatic at the tender age of 17 smile

1 You wrote down all Piltown Man lyrics in phonem (including 'woargh', 'hooompf' and 'hoorrsdorrdee dum pah doh') and only you can read them
2 You had invented a "strange-and-very-special-salted-cake" (according to your girlfriend...) called 'Horseback' with Cheese and Guiness, and you like it !
3 You had invented 5 Cocktails, named after Mike Oldfield's Albums (e.g. Amarok = Irish Single Malt, Grand Marnier, Hot Cherry liquor...)
4 You're sure absolutely everything can be done with Mike Oldfield music in background (even watching TV)
5 You send an Happy Birthday email to Mike oldfield by DarkStar
6 All your old vinyl are framed and hanged on your house's walls (and this make your girlfriend crazy)
7 All your friend know when you're about to talk about Mike Oldfield because of this light in your eyes
8 At work, your computer plays TB1 intro when you starting it and "Hello everyone" when you're logging in
9 When you've got to to fill a form, you draw a simili Tubular Bell instead of a small cross
A You always try to "convert" people that didn't know Mike Oldfield

And a lot of things already said :
- You make cookies with a Tubular shape (personnaly, I make them with coconut, pinaple and orange tree flower)
- ..if you can't log onto the net once without checking Dark Star or Tubular Web for news.
- when you'd rather listen to a MO album while playing a game rather than listen to the game's music.
- I bought Tubular bells 3, Guitars and TMB on their day of release.
- ..if you use Hans Claesson's wallpapers on your computer exclusively ! (I also try to use them on every server of my compagny... but they stop me after the 4th !)

Cheers, GMOVJ

*in addition to my previous post*

You might be a die-hard Mike Oldfield fan (cont.)...

12) ..if you have any mp3's of his rare music saved on your hard drive.

13) ..if, after listening to some those rare singles and remixes, you really want someone to compile all of them on one cd.

14) ..if your father (spouse, mother, etc) owns some of Mike's origional records, and you don't want to get rid of them either!

15) ..when you have spent hours doing nothing but listen to his music!

16) ..if you have actually danced to The Source of Secrets, or TMB title track (I wouldn't do such a thing...........hahahahaahahaha! Ok, Yes I have, and I'm proud of it, too!)

17) ..when you've "played" the instruments while listening to one of his cds (I'm a well-known "air piano", "air drum", "air guitar" and "air synthesizer" player smile

18) Darth Maul-- "..if one of His albums is playing right now as you're reading this." I say mp3 singles and such count, too! haha

I have almost all of MO's CDs (I'm still missing EM,KF and Amarok); I'm aiming at building a complete MO CDiscography, except for Exposed which I'm not interested in; I have fifteen (and I really mean fifteen) MO MP3's on my hard disk, including very rare ones... smile
Does all this mean I'm a MO fan-atic? smile smile

Mike Oldfield Fanatics Anonymous

Are you a Mike Oldfield fanatic?

Have you looked at other posts and said to yourself, "OH NO! I'M ONE OF THEM!"

Do you wonder if you're mentally stable about it?

There is hope. At MOFA, you will get the support you need. We don't discriminate based on gender, nationality or race; a Mike Oldfield Fanatic in any form is still a Mike Oldfield Fanatic just the same.

MOFA will help you cope with your obsessions, whatever they may be. We will give you the help you need in accepting yourself as a Fanatic, and not to be ashamed of it any more!! It's nothing to be ashamed of, and you don't have to be.

MOFA has helped many Fanatics accept themselves for who they are, and feel good about it. Some examples of greatful, self-confessed Mike Oldfield Fanatics we've helped are:

  • CarstenKuss
  • Olivier
  • GMOVJ
  • Fox
  • Mary-Carol Lindbloom
  • stig
  • Ugo

If we can help these fanatics, there's hope for you!

Our methods for helping you cope with your obsessions are:

counceling, thereapy, confessions, electro-shock, forcing you to listen to rap until you crack. These are just some of your options.

For questions about our practices, or to begin scheduling appointments, call MOFA at this toll-free number: 3

We never close, in case one of our patients has an "Oldfield Attack," wherein the patient in question develops the sudden urge to listen to a MO CD, but there are none in the vicinity! At our "Oldfield Attack" hotline, you may call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to hear a random track from a random MO CD to help you through your attack. Or if you preferr, you can suggest a track from an album to play.

We also sell our "Emergency Oldfield Attack Kit"(TM). It includes a cd player, and a 10 hour battery pack. All you do is put cds into it, and carry it around with you. When an Oldfield Attack happens, just insert a CD into the player within the kit, listen and relax. Recharge the batteries every 10 hours.

Being a Mike Oldfield Fanatic shouldn't be shunned upon. That's what we do here at MOFA: we help you cope with yourself for who you are as a MO fan, and give you the extra support that you can't get from anyone else!

The number again, to start setting up a schedule for sessions or for answers to any questions you may have (and a few you don't have) is: 3

You really know you are a Mike Oldfield fan when...

1. You MP3 all of Mike Oldfield's music and burn it onto CD's (JUST so you can listen more Mike continously) and listen to it in your NEW DVD player that plays MP3 CD's (which you bought specifically for this purpose).

2. You realise that that once you have MP3'd all his albums at 192kbps, you need at least 3 CD's to store them all.

3. This only makes you regret that your DVD/MP3 player doesn't hold at least 3 CD's.

4. You don't lend your MP3 CD's to ANYONE (apart from the fact it's wrong) because they are too precious to you.

5. You realise that at 192kbps that an MP3 of Amarok comes to about 73 Meg.

6. You re-rip your entire CD collection at a higher bit rate "cos you can".

7. You use the fastest and biggest machine at work to do it.

8. You buy a dedicated CD rack JUST to house your Mike Oldfield collection.

9. You consider buying a new one in case Mike releases more albums.

10. You accidently scratch a Mike Oldfield CD. You get online and order another one within 1/2 hour.

11. You have put aside over $3000 to make sure you can see him in concert next time he plays.

12. You ALWAYS loan people the CD and the book of "Songs of Distant Earth" at the same time.

13. You want to kill someone at WEA/Warner/etc when the sticker on the front of the CD/DVD cover doesn't come off properly, and leaves glue all over it, defacing the pristine nature of your Mike Oldfield collection.

14. You never refer to Mike Oldfield as anything other than Mike Oldfield, simply because he's worth the trouble.

Don't worry, alex.

There's never been a time when I've been continuously looking at the sky during a dramatic sunset with birds gliding way up high while listening to the whole of Incantations

Has anybody else done this? The best sections while doing this are the bits in the introductory 5/8,6/8 passage where it goes into a minor chord. In Amarok player section list they are '(first hint of Diana theme)','meditations','Diana I' of the top of my head. And also the bit where the strings which play at a dead pp dynamic in the song of hiawatha from part 2

I'd like to hear what different bits of Incantaions remind them of. Start a new topic in the Inc forum

I haven't been able to get enough MO albums to become as much of a fan-atic as the rest of you due to the time since I first became an ordinary fan, but one thing I have noticed was this

1. While having breakfast in a noisy communal room somewhere in Cardiff you hear the unmistakable theme of 'The Sentinel' being played suddenly. It lasts for about 20 seconds and it suddenly fades out. The world goes back to normal and you think 'Oh, it must be withdrawal symptoms'

Another thing that doesn't make me much of a fanatic as most of you is the fact that I didn't take any MO albums with me when I started boarding. Just all the modern ones that other people my age would get, but it was because I live in a more rural area than where I am boarding, and like most of you I wanted the tunes to remind me of being where I live
