It's that time of year in the US when Oldfield gets his only radio play as the beginning of "Tubular Bells" part 1 continues evolving into the official theme of Hallowe'en. I called my local radio host to remind him to play it and also suggested Tubular Bells 2 or 3.

He played the Exorcist theme, and a little while later played the beginning of part 2 of TB1 (known as "Harmonics" on TB2003), and complained on the air that "it was not spooky at all", which is certainly true. He had confused TB 1 part 2 with TB 2. I called him back and more specifically explained TB 2 and "Sentinel". He did end up playing this as well.

You're right - I keep hearing it everywhere I go.  It's on TV, radio, etc.  Problem is I have it as my ring tone so I keep thinking someone is calling me.

The same radio host likes to play the Exorcist theme for Mike's birthday. Is a situation of "Mike Oldfield is just Tubular Bells" an improvement over "Mike who?" ?

cool to hear that someone is lucky to hear tubular bells at all. I think i never never never have heard it on any norwegian radio. All the stations sucks..
All this country cares about is stupid top 20 music all over again and again...
Never such music like the score from the exorcist (even i prefer to call it Tubular bells  :D  )
I want to think good things when i hear tb theme. (in fact i think just music when i hear it)
Tb is someway a hymn to music and instruments...

After I left the earlier message, the same radio host played TB again. Later in the same program, by interesting coincidence, a guest referred to being called an Amadan (Ommadawn) as a child. Then a later radio host came on and he also played "Tubular Bells". He announced that it was by "Mike Oldsfield."

I'm going to try to get them to play "Ommadawn" for next week's program when the guest returns (the one who was an amadan as a child).

Big pat on the back for you Hiawatha for getting in touch with the radio station!! Even if only a few new people have become curious about the piano music they hear, then you will have been successful. I'm sure there are many more non clotheared nincompoops out there!

I forgot to say that on the BBC Radio 2 ( UK) early one morning last week, they played Mirrors by Sally Oldfield, and that was good to hear again after a long time.

If you played TB1 to a teenager right now im not sure what
they would make of it !! .... There seems to be a time and a
place for a certain Album to just Click ... It really needs to
be incoporated into some Mega TV Series to get everyone interested again.. Of Course a Few Plays on the Radio wouldnt go amiss...Maybe all these Goth Fans might Dig it if
they went and saw the Exorcist ..   Nice one to hear it being played Stateside though !!

The first few minutes would be immediately recognizable to them as "The Theme from the Exorcist". After that, it would be entirely new territory.

I did hear the into to the original Tubular Bells on "The 70's Album Show" on my local BBC radio station (3 Counties) last year, most BBc local radio stations generally are talk shows rather than music.  However last year did  e-mail the presenter to say that two of the greatest albums ever made, Queen's A Night at the Opera  :) and also Ommadawn   :) were celebrating their 30th Anniversary ( incidentally today(Halloween)  is the 31st Anniversary of the release of Bohemian Rhapsody). So anyway got the Prophets Song played from NATO, and also part 1 of Ommadawn, despite this being cut to the first 8 minutes or so , I guess due to time limitations , I was so looking forward to  hearing the screaming  guitar solo.  If I was  presenting the radio programme I'd have  played all of Ommadawn Part 1 and to hell with the consequences.
Apart from that I've heard the occasional Mike song played on Radio 2.

I don't quite know why TB usually seems to be played around Halloween, Ok I know the opening theme ended up being used for the Exorcist, but there's nothing sinister about TB, mysterious , unearthly perhaps, atmospheric especially when driving at night along tree lined roads.

WHOHOOO!!! I've bought myself a car, collect it later on today after being a year without one, I'll be able to drive along playing TB  :) . Hope I haven't forgotten how to drive :/ .

The guy who played it thought it was "spooky". When he played TB 1 part 2 by mistake after I asked for TB2, he complained that it was not spooky. When he finally played "Sentinel", he agreed it was "spooky" (because it sounded like TB1 part 1 no doubt).

I haven't heard any Oldfield on the radio at all, but I suspect that something from TB was played on the local NPR station. It's sort of like a lottery ticket--if you have a chance of winning, you have to buy the ticket. I haven't listened to any radio at all in days, so it's no wonder I've not heard any Mike. <-:

Hi, hope everyone had a happy Halloween!

Anyway, about Oldfield radio play, it seems that the main tune they play is "Moonlight Shadow", didn't hear it too much yesterday, though! Though, some time in the past couple of months, they played more MO than usual. They played the opening theme of TB, "Moonlight Shadow" and even "To France". I was completely bewildered, but happy all the same.

I wish they would play more MO, but we'll probably have to wait until more new Album releases. His most recent release "The Platinum Collection", came accompanied with an MO Interview on BBC Radio 2, and also the traditional TB Theme and Moonlight Shadow once again. I think it would be great if for ocne they could play the whole MO Tune.

Galadriel, congratulations on buying a new car. I'm sure you'll remember how to drive, and also have many happy drives listening to MO, and all your other favourite Albums.

It's not quite a new car, it's 6 years old with a low mileage, pretty economical on the petrol. Also has a 6 CD autochanger fitted, great on longer journeys.   Having a car means more freedom, also can look for better paid jobs too!!!

I guess if the piece of music is much above 3 or 4 minutes in length then it isn't usually played on the radio, pity , I guess getting the first 8 minutes of Ommadawn Part 1 played on the radio was an acheivement, I would have liked to heard the last 6 mins of part 1 or even better in its entireity.
I remember the late  Kenny Everitt breaking with convention seeming to promote Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (Bo Rhap also broke convention, especially for being  considered too long for a single, not to mention the first promotional music video)  whilst working as a DJ on Capital? Radio in 1975,he promised not to play it, but he  said "oh no my finger slipped" and I think he played it 14 times. I know that's pretty much what happened , I can't easily check the facts for sure, as I've got the story on my Queen "The Magic Years" videos (I'm showing my age here) , I've a box full of videos in a big cupboard, need to get some bookcases to store them, I can't easily get at my vids to watch them.
BTW didn't a DJ, IIR I think it was the late John Peel on his "Top Gear" (not the motoring show of the same name) radio programme, play Tubular Bells in it's entirity
:)

Speaking of cars  , now I own one I've more  POWEEEEERRRRRR  as Jeremey Clarkson  might say, to my elbow. YIPPPEEEE, I'm on  the right tracks, life is looking more rosy   :D .

I love that song. I think it's possibly my favourite Taylor song (as a part of Queen at least). Some incredibly bizarre lyrics in there.

"Told my girl I had to forget her.
Rather buy me a new carburetta..."

It's also the B-Side to the famous Bo Rhap. I wonder whether the story of Roger Taylor locking himself in a cupboard until Freddie accepted to have "I'm in Love With My Car" as the B-Side to Bo Rhap is true...

I don't think I've heard that story, hang on a mo, as I'm mad on Queen  I must've done.  I don't know how much truth there is in it.

.

As for Taylor penned songs I also love "Drowse", "Tenement Funster", "The Loser In The End" ,Fight From The Inside, "Sheer Heart Attack":)  those last two have the attitude of pure punk, who would have thought it from a band who combined glam and heavy rock.  Not forgetting RMT gave Queen two of thier biggest hit singles A Kind of Magic and Radio GaGa, (icidentally inspired by Roger's then two year old son, Felix coming out with the phrase "Radio poo poo!!!;)
It was hearing  Radio GaGa, then the John Deacon penned I Want to Break Free began my interest/obsession for Queen.

I'm wondering what it is about rock drummers and cars, Charlie Watts has a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, just to sit in it, as he's never passed his driving test, Roger Taylor, also Nick Mason races old cars , and John Bonham would race dragsters at Santa Pod( sounds like it should be in California , not on the Bedfordshire Noerthamptonshire borders).

Every member of Queen managed to write a classic Queen song, and for me that seals their place in rock historyu as being one of the best bands ever. I'll give you my four favourite songs per member

Mercury - Don't Stop Me Now (narrowly beats Bo Rhap because I hear that one all the time)

May - We Will Rock You (especially when it's live)

Taylor - I'm in Love With My Car/Radio GaGa

Deacon - You're My Best Friend

Hearing Queen live is absolutely extraordinary. I love the Wembley concert of 1986. Some great songs in that performance, and the classic ending of Freddie dressed in robes with a crown. I loved May's explosive climax of the First Act with his Brighton Rock Solo. It's length reminds me of an MO piece, which, for me, cements its brilliance.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for the day that TB is played in full on the radio. They did it for American Pie...do it for TB! For Part One at least, if not Part Two as well!

Cripes I'm having great difficulty picking a favourite  song penned by each member of Queen individually.   For a collective effort credited to all four  Queen my top three are

3) I Want It all
2) Innuendo
1) Stone Cold Crazy :)

My parents didn't let me  to go to the Wembley or Knebworth concerts in '86, cry, cry, cry , as I was 15 at the time. I love that fast  version that opens the Live Killers album, and also the version of Brighton Rock, it's so beautifully  haunting, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end WOW!!!! :D.

I haven't been able to play Live Killers in years,my (separated)   husband of 13 years wasn't really a Queen fan, so rarely could I listen to a Queen LP/CD in peace.I only  have LK on good old fashioned LP, need to buy myself the Cd of LK, or alternatively a turntable and phono stage (about 40-50% of my music collection is on LP only) . I need a new Cd player soon. as my one is 13 years old and can be tempramental,I have my eye on the Cambridge Audio 640C  V2    . Having spent out buying  a car this week I guess I'll have to wait.   That said have an interview for a rather reasonable paid job on Thursday, hope my lucky streak pays off.

I think Tubular Bells has been played in it's entirity on UK radio, but not in my lifetime, no tell a lie within my lifetime but I was too young to remember what I was doing in 1973    here's a quote from  my post above

Quote

Still it's about time this event happened again.
