I'm sorry to report this but this guy decided to do a rather negative report / interview with MiKe.
You can read for yourself....i believe this sort of reporting was reason enough for Mike to leave Britain...nothing to do with tax.
This guys a grade A asshole!

I don't think it was that negative. It describes a troubled man full of contradictions who is finally becoming at peace with himself.
It doesn't say much about his music, but what to expect from the Daily Mail? The article keeps to the conventions of celebrity journalism.

It's actually not too bad considering it's the Mail. Given that they've always got a very specific (and rather tiresome) agenda that they filter everything through, this is still a reasonably interesting piece. I could have done without the last paragraph however. Snide and unnecessary right there.

not entirely sure of some of the accuracy in the report either...

9 children , thought it was 7

"Post-ceremony, as well as trying to capitalise commercially by rushing out a six-disc greatest hits called Two Sides", - that's not right is it?

some of the comments  that follow the article (grrrr...make me so cross!!  :( ) actually confirm exactly what Mike observed about British culture and attitudes to success...I don't blame him for moving, who says you have to stay anywhere?...you do what's right at the time..some stay -others go, push boundaries, look outside the cave...that's what all pioneers, inventors, creators do. Fortune favours the brave etc etc.

Does it say 9? ...

So it does! I only scanned it as it was the Daily Fail  ;)

He doesn't have 9 kids does he?? I thought it was only 7 as well. Unless there's some gossip I've missed out on along the way...

Well, the caption on the pic says Eugene is his 7th child and, as far as we know, he was the last one, wasn't he? By that reckoning it's 7 then...and the Daily Fail should fire their researchers.

Mike seems much happy and relaxed about his own life.It has taken decades to achieve that, but I don't see that massive rant and moaning from those 2009 interviews (e.g. Q magazine).

I remember when I first came to the UK in the late 90s,I lived for one month in Bornemouth, you can't compare to what is now (thanks to Labour). As a Brazilian living in the UK for almost 3 years,I've got my issues with Brazil as Mike has with the UK in general.

You have to find a place you feel happy in every aspect of your life, from personal to professional. I've moved here due to my scientific career I do want to pursue. Brazil's not that big in science, being a scientist isn't that cool back there. It was a tough move, but no regrets at all.I'm enjoying every second of it.

Mike's confortable in the Bahamas while I'm here in England :)

Actually, having read this interview again, they do appear to be painting him in a negative light - the headline grabber puts their negative spin on things. The Telegraph interview from the other weekend was far nicer and just talked about his music. Still i suppose the old saying of no publicity is bad publicity...

Not really negative just the odd Daily Mail inaccuracy which is par for the course for them I guess. Not as though they tried to slag him off and I do get the impression that, these days, he's very laid back and couldn't give a flying **** if they did slag him off.

It's the HEADLINE I have issue with - people read that line and imagine him 'ranting' and there were a few things on twitter where people were being rude about M O saying they are glad he is not in the country - because they see the 'headline' and hear a bitter man. Shame.

It's odd how controversial it is for an Englishman to move out of England. If a Swedish artist has has an international hit the Swedes sort of expect him/her to move abroad.

England produces many great artists and musicians, but it seems the country fails to appreciate and support their own talents. For a bit more mariginal/esoteric artist it is a good idea to the states or mainland Europe, beucase in England gigs are thin on the ground. Edward Ka-Spel, Robert Hampson, Douglas Pearce are just a few favorite musicians who I know have been in that situation.

The initial Daily Telegraph interview also cited 9 children.  Unless Mike actually said that to both journalists, and has a couple we don't know about, I would guess that Tom Leonard used that first article as the most current research tool to supplement his daytrip out of the USA.  Fortunately, the bods at the photo library just went with the facts as they are recorded.

@ simmo: Oscar Wilde said that there's just one thing worse than being talked about, and that's not being talked about. I think he was right. :)

@ lars: so in England the old nemo propheta in patria thing is apparently still valid? ;)

Interesting article, once you get past the Daily Fail's obvious agendum (tax, tax, tax, yada, yada, yada ad infinitum...). Some nice photographs too. Thanks for the link, OP. :-)
