Okay This is really bothering me. you all know that the cover of Tubular Bells has that contorted chime, right. I am playing the chimes in a school band and I was wondering ( as I so often do) what note is the bent chime? is it the Low E chime or Say the D# chime which one is it AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!>???????????????
IT IS STARTING TO DRIVE ME FREAKIN CRAZY!!!!!!

Note:In my band they call them Chimes not Tubular Bells.

AFAIK the original 'Bell' was custom metal work and very unlikely tuned to some special note.

I agree, it was likely never played, just produced for the cover art.

A musician friend of mine told me that it just can't play anything, with that shape. To play notes, a pipe has to be either straight or plain triangular. :)

It would play a note - every object has a fundamental resonant frequency - it just probably wouldn't sound terribly good. The bends would certainly affect the way the vibrations travel along it, though I'm not certain that bending it into that particular shape would be hugely different to bending it into a triangle (though of course, two of the three 'sides' of the twisted bell shape aren't straight like they would be on a triangle). I'm not actually certain that bending a tube into a triangle would do a lot for its sound either (the instrument the triangle is of course a rod rather than a tube). I'm afraid I don't know enough about the physics of chime design and construction (my own area being that of chordophones) to be able to tell you any more than that. I seek out some more information, if anyone's seriously interested, though the it's likely to be quite complex in nature...
