I recently was idly looking through the CD's at my local record store. I am continually replacing my vinyl/tapes with CD's so I had a look through the Mike Oldfield selection.- Tubular Bells, Tubular Bells 2003, Tubular Bells 3 – The best of Tubular Bells etc. As a long-standing huge fan of MO, I realize there is much more to his music than TB but I couldn’t help but think that the casual observer or potential fan might have been put off by every album being something bells. Has Mike overdone the bells or is it the record shops fault for only stocking what they presume people have heard of and will presumably buy?

I'd say a bit of both. Even looking at all his albums laid out together (as on his discography page), the image of the bell seems to crop up rather a lot amongst the covers on view, so I think I'd say that if he hasn't overdone it, he's certainly pushed it to its limits. It confuses people - I know people who don't know that Tubular Bells II and its companions aren't the same as Tubular Bells, and people who want to buy Tubular Bells, see Tubular Bells, Tubular Bells II, Tubular Bells III, The Millennium Bell and Tubular Bells 2003 and don't have a clue which one they should buy...not that it bothers Mike!

It does seem like the Tubular Bells albums are often promoted in favour of Mike's other works, though. It's understandable, they're an easy sell because people are familiar with Tubular Bells (even if they think they're buying the album they heard in 1973 when they take that copy of Tubular Bells III to the checkout...), but it maybe doesn't do Mike any favours as far as promoting him as a well rounded artist goes. He could probably work on that himself, if he chose to, by doing the right kind of self promotion in the right places...but he probably doesn't want to, otherwise he'd have done it already.

Mike has released 24 albums in his entire career...

...only 5 of them are Tubular Bells albums. Mike has a much wider artistic vision than people give him credit for.

I personally blame the stupidity of the general public and music journalists - who have written off every album he's done that's not TB related. There's not as much demand for them as a result, thus record stores don't stock as many copies.

By the way, have you noticed that many record stores incorrectly put TB under "T" instead of "O".

That says it all really...

Mike is the musical equivalent of Orson Welles - a precocious talent who came out of nowhere and made his debut with a groundbreaking masterpiece. It made such an impression on people that they kinda lost interest in anything else he did, all of his subsequent efforts were compared to his debut. The artist had become eclipsed by his creation :/

So he will be remembered as one of the major artists of its time and its genre, be praised forever by hordes of fans and taught in (music) schools as a model. Not such a bad destiny after all...
