Has anyone else gone into chat yet? Tim Highfield and I talked for a few minutes. A very nice addition to a very good site!

Will there be (or would anyone like to see) scheduled chats?

I went in there and chatted with olivier - he was still testing it at that stage I believe.

Still, I'll look in there every now and then to see if anyone's in there...and everyone else will run away at the first sight of me...still, at least that would mean the system won't get overloaded wink.

I'll try it once a day. Let's see what happens!

Has Olivier got rid of the HTML chat now?

I, for one, would like to see scheduled chats, because then it means I don't have to keep logging on and finding out I'm the only person there wink.

Anyway, I'll keep logging on, hoping others turn up.

Hello all.

Tim's idea of pre-arranged times for tubular chats is a good idea. So as to be time-zone neutral, it would have to be arranged using GMT (_NOT_ US time, please).

What about having scheduled chat times every 6 hours GMT (i.e. 0000, 0600, 1200, 1800). That would make it [8am, 2pm, 8pm, 2am] in W.A., or [4pm, 10pm, 4am, 10am] in the US (some of it, anyway) which would not be completely unfeasable.

Does anyone else have any suggestions/grizzles/sane ideas/whatever?

Yes, please feel free to post suggestions for chat schedules. And don't forget The Original Chatroom: the IRC channel. http://home.online.no/~tbrauti/oldfield/chat/

I see the tubular chat more like a chat for people who are on the forums at the same time (I'll add a link in the Online Users section), but you never know how it will evolve. I also hope serious topics will still be posted in the forums so everybody can read them all the time.

We could change the times by an hour to make it easier for people at GMT (and me!):

GMT 2300-so you can chat before going to bed
0500-so you can chat before breakfast
1100-so you can chat before lunch
1700-so you can chat after work

I am still the only person online at the moment. I get cut off in the middle of a conversation, I come back hours later, no one else around. frown

I have to second Olivier's reminder about the IRC chat room - there's usually someone there, and to me, using an IRC client is much nicer than either of the free chat services that Olivier has tried, although the current java one is fairly adequate (although there is a thing that means certain browsers show peeople's text in revolting colours which can't be changed.

Anyway, I'll try and drop in on the chat here when I'm looking at the forums, and if other people do the same, there's more chance of us meeting up...

Hmmm...

IRC chat- does require certain programs, no?

I cannot download these programs--not allowed to, not my computer--so the chat here is the only one I have access to.

<sound of everyone hurrying over to IRC now they know Tim can't get there>

Maybe in a few months when my machine is back online. But at the moment I'm stuck with this chat.

Purpose of this rant: none, really.

Tim - there are java applets around the place that let you use IRC without downloading programmes. Just go to http://www.dalnet.com/, type in your nick, and press "go".

But if I type http://www.dalnet.com without the comma, you won't have any excuse wink (except if it doesn't work...)

Hi fans,

T.Chat is a great idea Olivier ! But, as I'm @ work, with a proxy+firewall, I can't use it... I hope it will not turn these forum off.
Cheers

If Tubular Chat doesn't work because of a proxy server, you can normally use a programme like sockscap to get around it. Just run sockscap, point it to where netscape.exe is, and then go to the Tubular Chat page.

I hope that this URL turns out better than my last attempt...

I see you've changed from the previous version to a Java chatroom. I have no problem, but it doesn't all fit on my screen (800x600 - school network so can't change it) so it looks funny when I hit the scroll bar.

OK, when I went in today (1350GMT/1450CET/0850ET/0550PT) nobody was there frown and I was all alone frown frown

I think that there should be occasional scheduled chats, based upon the user base of the forums (since they will be using it most). 1200-1400GMT is a good period, since this is 2000-0000 in Australia's 3TZs, and 0700-0900ET (it is also my lunch break biggrin). The only other good period world-wide would be 2200-0000GMT (0800-1200 Aus, 1200-1900 across the US's 6TZs). Besides that, there will need to be exclusive periods (1600-1800GMT/1100-1300ET, which is unfortunately 0000-0200 in WA) where it is convenient for much but not all of the world. IF only there were somewhere I could post a proposal (I don't have my website up and running yet frown I am having problems)

For those that have further ideas, I think I will set up a topic exclusively for people to post ideas of *times* when scheduled chats could happen. Of course, not that people should not use the chats at other non-scheduled times

I have lost my virginity. ahem ... at least on IRC. I was on IRC on I think Wed. in #mike_oldfield chatting with someone from Colombia. I haven't been able to get in since for two, yes, TWO reasons.

1. Internet where I use it during the day has been DOWN for ~1wk
2. At home, I get AutoKilled (damned ISP)

Never mind, I'm back up for the week now

I think that must have been Gmcclass you met there (the guy from Colombia)...one of the many regulars.
The place is often more active during late evenings in Europe (about 20:00 GMT at the moment). A few more will turn up as it becomes evening in the various parts of the US.

Remember with scheduled chats that fall in daytime anywhere is that people will be at work/school during the week...not that it should stop other people (who aren't busy then) meeting though. I think it may end up being up to individual groups of people to set a time between themselves...
Maybe if people say when they'll be most likely to be able to chat then other people can aim to be there at the same time...

From about 20:00 GMT onwards might be a good time to find me (that'll become 21:00 GMT for me in the winter wink ).

Here's a poser for you:

Have YOU ever used the chatroom?

If the answer is no, then why not? (although GMOVJ has a credible excuse already posted)

If the answer is yes, then do you still use the chatroom?

-Tim-

I'm just interested to see if it's still being used

P.S. Yes, I have used it on various occasions, but I am now behind a firewall as of a few days ago (and I'm not trying what cp suggested (yet)).

OK, cancel that firewall for the moment.

But the questions still stand, waiting for answers.

I guess you know what my answers are already, Tim, but seeing as nobody else has replied...

Yes, I have used the chatroom, but I haven't looked in there for a little while.
It always seemed hard to actually find anyone in there...
