Imagine Music of the Spheres knocks 'em dead. (And dear God, I wish some of them would be knocked dead.) Virgin/Warner and Mercury rush out with total agreement (yeah sure) a complilation of Mike's most classical sounding music to capitalise. What is on it? Here are a few thoughts, take off the ones you don't like and add on what you do.

1. Mont St Michael
2. Lake Constance
3. Mike Oldfield's Single
4. Extract (you choose which) from Hergest Ridge
5. Extract (") from Incantations
6. Taurus 3
7. Muse
8. The Killing Fields Extracts (3 x Pran's... sections?)
9. Woodhenge
10. Legend
11. Top of the Morning?
12. Rocky?
13. Argiers

Any other ideas? I've tried to select the most acoustic tracks and there are several others that one could include such as the Path. Lets see what we end up with.

Blimey got to add one - Broad Sunlit Uplands - very classical sounding. Mike loves his string sections but did you read the bit in his autobiog where he has a go at horn players!

I'd add Blackbird on the list,it has got a such melancoly that you can also find in some classical piano pieces.

Suppose an extract from Incantations too - that section on part 4 about 7mins to 12 mins where the vibraphones give way to the tabla drums and then the guitar and orchestra build up to a crescendo and the trumpets come in, then  it all subsides and back to the main theme...this is work of genius!

and while we're on the subject of Mike's classical links, what links are there between Mike and Classical music? Bedford, yes, his use of orchestras and strings and horns sometimes (eg QE2, Millennium Bell, Incantations)...lots of others tho... name any?

I haven't heard "Legend" or "Argiers". When were they recorded?

Argiers is one of those tracks recorded with Les Penning, ca. 1976-1977 at Througham.

Legend is the B-side of the 7" Pictures in the Dark. Certainly a track from the same 1984-85 period, given the sound of the synthesizers. I've heard (or dreamt) that the track was a demo for Ridley Scott's movie, finally scored by Tangerine Dream (U.S. cut) and Jerry Goldsmith, but that seems unlikely.

Maybe a short *"Duo Sonare" clip could be squeezed in as a transition between some longer pieces.

*(Classical guitar duo who covered Tubular Bells)

Marky, perhaps the use of recurring themes (or 'leitmotifs' in a very general sense)? Examples I can think of are Ommadawn, Amarok, The Songs of Distant Earth, and even Five Miles Out, I think. May be more, but it's still morning here for me.

And thank you, Clodomir, for enlightening me on those mystery tracks.

Should somebody be working on the Classical Mike Oldfield track listing, in readiness for the ear-splitting success that will be MOTS? Is there enough material to fill it? I think so!
