The use of parentheses in song titles can be interesting and powerful, but perhaps also anti poetic. They are often used to bring you back down to Earth and concrete things.

Vangelis - Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria (Into Eternity)
Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
U2 - Treasure (Whatever Happened To Pete The Chop)

A personal favorite is WASP's "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)"!
Can't help but noticing how the eyebrow-raising part of the title is coquetteishly placed within parathesis.

And when I say favorite I mean favorite use of parantheses in song title, nothing else. The song is not very noteqorthy at all. Not even for being a WASP song.

I always found very interesting the use of a slash on the title White Light / White Heat, which is a song AND and album by the Velvet Underground.

I also like it when parentheses are used on the title of an album, like Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy).

I don't think that any of Sigur Ros' music can be classified as happy or sad or anything. Indeed, to me the music on ( ) doesn't express any particular emotion. I just feel a trememdous sense of power being conveyed all the way through tracks 6 to 8, but that's pretty much all.

Yes, it signals something a bit out of the ordinary, which, of course, the VU's record certainly was. By violating song title conventions they're pointing to the violating of other conventions as well.

I can't help what I feel, it just happens, and I feel sadness everytime I listen

Actually, I agree with you, bee - although I really only know Takk. I suspect half the musical instruments in that are icicles, and they can't help but creating an un-warm feeling!

Its very much an individual thing....we all hear things slightly differently.

Much of Sigur Ros's music can sound slightly disturbed or even forlorn to me, but I still enjoy it....when the mood is right of course.

Sorry but what is parenthesis?

parent + thesis -> parenthesis

It's when your parents tell you their point of view.

(Main Title from) Chariots of Fire - Vangelis. Titles of pieces on  soundtracks are always either stupid or peculiar. :)

@ Hastengas: I don't think remixes count. Otherwise I should feel complelled to list "Got to Be Certain (Out For a Duck, Bill, Platter Plus Dub Mix)" by Kylie Minogue - a.k.a. the instrumental version of the song. Yes, it does exist. Check this out. Most outrageously funny title I ever saw for a simple instrumental version. :D

The thing with remixes is they sometimes use square brackets in lieu of parentheses. They often deconstruct the smooth originals to inhuman square waves, maybe that's why.

She's trying to make a play on "duckbill platypus", presumably.

I don't think that she was behind that. After all, this was Stock-Aitken-Waterman... back then, Kylie was not much more than one of their puppets. :D

By the way, I believe that a duckbill platypus is what we call ornitorìnco here. Am I correct?
