Did anyone watch 'The Einstein Factor' last night in Australia on Channel 2. An acquaintance Matthew Sorrell who is a Professor of Education or something at the Adelaide University and well known to the Amarok Mailing List, appeared on the show and was quizzed on Mike Oldfield. A bit disappointing really, he was beaten by a girl whose special subject was a cartoon character called 'Daria'. The questions were easy, I think I only didn't know one and that was what year was The Complete MO released, obviously an easy one as well. Matthew got a high score but made a bad mistake saying that Alan Rickman was listed as being a 'wandering' player rather than a 'strolling' player and I think the final score was only about one questions difference. He studied so hard for it too, he knows things about Mike that Mike doesn't know! But I never would have beat the buzzer so I would have lost miserably. I taped it so will provide a list of the questions soon if anyone is interested.

I caught this one thanks to your earlier tip off.  Matthew did well, missed only the "strolling player" question and the "Punkadiddle was the B side to what single" question (answer was Five Miles Out - btw, is that correct?  I've never really kept up with the singles).  The bonus question was "Hall & Oates covered Family Man in 1983 - true or false?"  The Brains Trust was generally not much help - they got it wrong and seemed to be under the impression that it was a H&O song, although Tim's complimentary comment suggested some familiarity with Mike's music beyond Tubular Bells and Moonlight Shadow.

Good onya, Matthew!

She's Devra Robitaille, she only appeared at the early 1982 concerts. I don't think she seems drunk though.

I'll have to look at my singles but Punkadiddle is from Platinum.  Woodhenge was the B side to blue peter but In can't remember what was the b side to FMO.

Also I'm sure Hall and Oats did cover MShadow.  And some one covered Family man recently (very badly if you ask me!;)

Would be nice to see the Questions - we don't have a TV.

H&O's cover of Family Man probably sold more world wide than Mike did, but I bet Tim Cross was a bit upset at being listed as "Kim Cross" on the writing credits for their version.

I followed Matts swotting on the AML, and hoped he'd do well, but was surprised he went to the Brains trust on that one.

Here in the UK we have "Mastermind" where you get a specialist subject round, then a general knowledge round. Problem with that is if you win, you have to choose a different subject for the next show.

Anyway, well done to Matthew for appearing and hopefully pushing Mike's profile up a bit in Oz.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

I've transcribed the questions and answers below for your interest.  I have an mpeg recording but no clue as to how to distribute it.  Tried to edit this morning, but the sound is not working (it seems that most things on my computer work on alternate days).

Delighted to hear you are TV-free.  Terrific medium, generally appalling standard of content.

And I'm still working on your cryptic Ommadawn reference from the "favourite melody" post.  Not much to go on there, but that's what makes it interesting I guess.

The Einstein Factor transcript:
PB = Peter Berner (Host)
MS = Matthew Sorrell (MO Champion)
Where parts of the question are enclosed in brackets, this denotes Matthew’s response as the question is being asked.

PB: Occasional narrator of Tubular Bells was which former member of the Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah Band)?
MS: Vivian Stanshall
PB: Correct.  Tracks on which album include Moonlight Shadow, In High (Places, Foreign Affair….)?
MS: Crises.
PB: Correct.  Oldfield composed the music for which 1984 Oscar (winning film)?
MS: The Killing Fields.
PB: Correct.  What were Oldfield’s two UK number one albums in 1974?
MS: Hergest Ridge and Tubular Bells.
PB: Correct.  Comprising a 60 minute track of continuous (but classically…)?
MS: Amarok.
PB: Correct.  Of the many instruments Oldfield plays on Tubular Bells, what is credited as guitar sounding like what?
MS: Bagpipes.
PB: Correct.  Which Oldfield album was inspired by the Arthur C. Clarke novel of the same (name)?
MS: The Songs of Distant Earth.
PB: Which Oldfield track was recorded in several versions including BT’s Pure Luminescence Remix and the UltraViolet Mix Edit?
MS: <Looking for answer on ceiling> …er…Sentinel.
PB: Let There be Light.  Released in 1982, live Punkadiddle is the B side of which single?
MS: <Pause for face-scrunching>  Pass.
PB: Five Miles Out.  Introducing the instruments at the end of the album’s first half, actor Alan Rickman as MC is credited on Tubular Bells 2 as a what?
MS: Wandering player.
PB: Strolling player.  Recording the 1968 album Children of the Sun was which folk duo comprising Oldfield and his sister Sally.
MS: The Sallyangie.
PB: Correct.  Which year saw the release of the compilation The Complete Mike Oldfield?
MS: 198..<searching, searching>...5.
PB: Correct.  Oldfield played on which Kevin Ayers and the Whole World album with a one word title made up of several words?
MS: Whatevershebringswesing.
PB: Platinum part 4 includes an extract of….<BZZZZZ> the buzzer beat us…I’ll complete the question for anyone at home…. Platinum part 4 includes an extract of North Star by which (composer)?
MS: Philip Glass.
PB: Philip Glass is correct.  Allright we have a bonus question to come…the Mike Oldfield song “Family Man” was a hit in 1983 when covered by pop duo Hall & Oates.  True or False, Matthew?  How do you want to play it?
MS: I think I’ll trust the Brains Trust on this one.
PB: <Incredulous guffaw>

The Brains Trust look at each other wondering what to do.  Mention of Moonlight Shadow, “I don’t think he wrote the Hall & Oates one”.  From Tim: “H&O were a different type of music and in fact I think he was better than anything they ever did.”  Answer:  FALSE.

MS: A great pity.
PB: A great pity, says Matthew very diplomatically.  The answer we needed was TRUE, Matthew stays on 1000 points….

And the show continues without further reference.

Thanks for that Andrew because I left my tape at my Mums, altho the show is repeated at 1pm during the week but I don't know which day that show was repeated.

I remember now I got the Let there Be Light question right and I didn't know the B side of Punkadiddle question.

If you compare Family Man to MS, it has a similar heavy guitar section in the middle of it doesn't it?

I think it would have been the same with this show Andy that if Matthew had won, he would have had to choose another subject for the next show, so that would have been difficult as anyone who is obsessed about Mike has not much room left for anything else (joking! ) So even if he had won, Mike would not have received another mention.

So if he had got the three wrong answers correct, plus been allowed to answer the last one, and not given the final question to the Brains Trust he would have ended up with 1500 points. (The reason he handed it to the Brains Trust was because if they had got it right, he would have earned 200 points instead of 100). I think the winner only got 1100 or 1200 points.
