If I understand all this correctly, something that started with Richared Banson selling records out the back of a van seems to be about to end with the news that zavvi has called in the administrators.

I know other bits of Virgin are completely separate (including Virgin records?)  but it still seems a bit like the end of an era.

I'll try and think of a more positive comment to put in the Merry Xmas thread tomorrrow :)

I must admit I`m not surprised by that news, their store in Newcastle is very seldom busy.Plus there are so many good independant record stores in Newcastle such as RPM,Spin and Steel Wheels etc that massivly undercut them anyway,I`d never see the point of going there.Likewise on the games and dvd`s,much cheaper elsewhere with a far broader selection.Too many fingers in too many different pies, none of them done very well imo.It is sad because the original Virgin store in Newcastle back in the day was first rate I have to say.Makes me wonder how "well" the likes of HMV are doing?Probably not great I guess?...Online shopping, downloads, and economic recession,I dare say Zavvi/Virgin wont be the last to go under.

yep in some ways it's hard to believe, but I feel internet shopping has overtaken record shops in terms of sales.  I didn't have a Virgin store near me , but I did find it as 3 Wheeler did say.   The best thing about stores I find is the HMV  Sale or if i decide I must have something on the spur of the moment if I happen to be shopping, which is rare as I detest shopping (buying music, guitars or cars excepted, as I do enjoy browsing/ shopping for thse items).
