Hi.

I am very surprised whith the "Shade" CD, but i am not sure it is ok.

In the last few months i have been listening the music from people like "Schiller" and "Jason Cluts (FL Studio)". I like very much the way both can produce electronic music with elegance and some acoustic touchs.

I thought the "Shade" from Oldfield would be similar to these artists with additional guitars over it. It sounded ok for my tastes.

And finally we have "Shade" from Oldfield.

I like "Slipstream", but seriously, it is mainly from Jason Cluts.
Also I like very much "NightShade", and here we have Schiller.

But, when Oldfield works alone whe have:

- "Romance" and "Lakme". In my opinion it is not a logical evolution from a composer like Oldfield.

- "Quicksilver" sounds like a failed experiment.

Is Oldfield taking the wrong way in his musical evolution?
Is "Shade" a failed experiment?

What do you think?

Regards from Spain.

I am getting actually rather annoyed about all the talk, blah blah, has Mike lost it? Is Mike aging fast? I DON'T CARE!
People using such scrutiny in every aspect of his career, being nerdy with facts is just lame.

to call Shade a failed experiment is not really fair. Ok, it's not all brilliant, but a lot of the songs are quite magical. Surfing I just keep playing over and over, and Resolution and songs 5 & 7 are great as well :D Just keep playing the great tracks you like and skip the ones you don't like (which probably means Romance) and don't get annoyed!  :)

Schiller, first of all, has never been especially good. A mediocre trance/chillout producer. IMO, of course.

Second, you call Quicksilver failed?  :(

Hi all.

I am talking about evolution and "in my personal opinion" evolution are:

- Quicksilver
- SlipStream
- Romance
- Nightshade
- and Lakme

For, me
- Resolution
- Surfing
- TOAA
are classical Oldfield with the robotic voices and some electronic touch, but no evolution.
But, ok, it is only my opinion.

Resolution is ok, TOAA is fine, but globally I think that Shade is something like a failed experiment.

Being nerdy with facts is not lame, it's just the way people are here. If you want to tell people they're too interested in Mike Oldfield, then you've come to the wrong place.

LOL

Yeah.

Knowing things is fine, and useful to fans that want to know more, but placing each track and step in Mike's career under the microscope is annoying to me and I'm sure it would be to him. Basically, I like Mike for his music, the fact that ALL these topics about what is good in Light + Shade, what is bad, what is good, hype and anti-hype surrounding the album, people making judgements from excerpts and deciding whether or not you will like the album just from that. It's lame. I guess I've never been through this album hype thing with an artist before, so I am getting used to it, but there are soooo many topics about L+S already it's crazy  :/

I agree with you that there's been a bit of a hype.

Apparently there's been a lot of expectations on this album. It seems many fans expected L+S to be a "return to form". I don't know why. To me it's just a logical extension of what he's done the past ten years (but the singing home computer is a bit too much I admit).

I've just heard the excerpts and read the reviews, but it seems to an OK Oldfield album. I think TSODE was his low point. He's been getting better since, but I sure didn't expect another Incantations or Five Miles Out (which is what I would prefer).

To be honest, I don't think that many people here are looking for evolution in Mike's music: they're looking for him to go back to what he was doing before. I don't feel that's really a fair expectation, and I certainly don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

Crikey folks. I can't believe the exception that has been taken to some comments. This is an Oldfield fan website and Oldfield fans post their opinion on what is good........but also you must expect opinions on what is bad. Please don't take it as a personal slight if others disagree with your opinion. That would be total subjective nonsense.

Given Mike's versatillity displayed over the past 30+ years, I think it's fair to say that it would be very presumptious to expect everyone to like everything.

Please don't disrespect siul's opinion as it is as valid as anyone's here.
