This is not closely MO-related, and it's for musicians only. Olivier, if you think this shouldn't be here, then please delete or move it.
OK. In the Raft webcast, on Olivier's question, Mike picks up his newest guitar and plays some notes spontaneously.

Now my question:
When someone asks you to test a guitar (keyboard, drumset, violin, etc....), what is the first thing you play on it? -Carsten-

I'd probably just strum across the open strings of a guitar or other plucked stringed instrument. Maybe with a piano or keyboard I'd just pick a random key...

But then, I move in for the chord wink

Actually, it depends on the sound - that's the purpose of testing out the open strings/random keys. It then makes me think "I wonder if it would sound good if I played...this...". So it's all a bit random...but I'll probably go for a nice chord, most of the time smile.

Uh oh,
I had the funny experience that the attempt to play something bombastic, melodic or impressiv spontaneously, always fails. This could be because I am actually not a skilled musician. However I like my role as a composer...
Thus my conclusion is, not to get involved into such a situation, where I have to play something and everyone EXPECTS something from me. If it's unavoidable I try to prentend that I don't know anything about music and I am totally unable. Then I play a key, the octave, a chord. Hit the pedal and everybody feels satisfied...

Yes, Dervish_D, I also think something complicated isn't the right thing to start with. But my reason is different from yours: If you play something complicated, you have to concentrate on playing and not on listening to the sound. And that's what you want when testing an instrument, isn't it?

So you do something simple. But what is simple? - That depends on who you are. This is why I thought this might be an interesting question.

Had to think about it some time. But then I found out:
- on acoustic guitars, I play an open e minor chord, almost always. I let it ring, a long time. Then I start some finger-picking.
- on keyboards, I press some mid-range key, holding it down a looong time, waiting what happens. Then I probably say: "What a weird sound..."

As I am mainly a keyboardist, when I test keyboards I put the piano sound on and make some arpeggios...just to check how the piano sound is. smile Then, almost always, I play a piece I've composed by myself....Elton John-style. smile

When I was looking for a violin (3-4yr ago), the first things I played on each were (in order: open strings, scales, arpeggios

On another note ( wink) if I perform, I like to use some of Mike's stuff to warm up and get the fingers moving. Something like a slightly botched Top Of The Morning or TB finale usually suffices, though JMJ's Second Rendez-vous (only 2-3 minutes of it) usually gets a look in as well.

The only instrument I ever get to play is the keyboard, and I don't even own one (have to go to a school holiday program smile) It really would depend what the keyboard was set to. Not being musical in the slightest, I usually play either a random note, or whatever would sound coolest. I have been trying to play the Far Above the Clouds bell tune, but I've only figured out the first 4 or 5 notes. I do only get to use the keyboards at most 4 times a year though.
