Here's a question for all you die-hards.
When and where did you hear MO for the first time?
In 1975, I was in a crappy movie theatre with wooden seats in South Australia, when I heard Tb played over the stereo just before the movie. I think "Tommy" was screening.
I was so impressed, after the movie i asked the projectionist who it was, and i bought the vinyl the next day.

I agree Micheal the official soundtrack for Tommy was fantastic but i never got it on vinyl.  :D

Getting back to Mike O .
For myself it was Five Miles Out ,My older Brother being the local Ice Rink DJ at the time was not able to get the 5MO single to play so bought the album instead.
Once he obtained said single I was able to barter the Album off him for a few Car washes and odd jobs.
Fond memories of sitting in front of our Pye Stereo ,Headphones on cranking Taurus 2 to the max.
Drumming away on ice cream containers and such.
Kinda makes the Tinnitus all worth it really

By the time Discovery had come out I had his back catalog and had to like everyone else wait through the drought until Islands came out , maybe thats why its so revered  , it certainly was my summer album of that year .

I bought Tubular Bells as a teenager, and liked it a lot. Then I bought Boxed, and tried to make myself like Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, and the short pieces on the compilation disk, but I really didn't (except for "Portsmouth"). Then Incantations came out and I bought it. I disliked it and thought "what a pity - Mike Oldfield is all washed up". Then some years later Channel 2 used a piece of music to "sign off" with (it was the days when TV stations went to sleep), and I immediately guessed it was by Mr O. It was "Wonderful Land", so I bought QE2, and liked it more than the earlier records of his I had. But I didn't buy any more until many years later, when I heard Taurus 2 and realised Mr O had taken a quantum leap in musical inspiration. I went out and bought all his CDs then, and shortly after joined tubular.net.

I first heard TB when I was playing in my friends' house - it was her dad's. I liked it - and it seemed very 'adult' at the time, so I wouldn't have asked my own parents to buy it.  Five years on my first boyfriend played Hergest Ridge - that struck me as very seductive and mesmerizing music. Then, round about the time I was starting my nurse training I discovered Ommadawn - that was very 'me' and the first MO LP that I bought. Always checked him out after that in the record shops - Incantations soon after Ommadawn...then QE2.... Platinum...

I saw the TBII premiere (Edimburgh) on TV in 1992, I was literally hypnotized. I bought the CD the next day and the rest, as they say, is history. :)

My big brother bought Tubular Bells in 1982. Friends of his had been to Roskilde and seen Mike live and was talking enthusiastically about him at the time.
At the time I was 10 years and not a fan of ordinary rock music. I liked Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk. As many boys do I enjoyed mystery and sci-fi. Tubular Bells seemed mysterious enough so I became a fan.
In the summer of '83 I bought Hergest Ridge (first record I bought with my own money!;) and I got Crises for christmas (on cassette!;).

Actually, it seems not many people liked Mike here in Scandinavia until he played Roskilde. I'm not sure Tubular Bells was a chart success here.

It seems to me there three (possibly four) periods in Mike's career where he got many new fans:

-1973/74 (TB and HR in the charts)
-1981-84 (much touring, rising popularity in mainland Europe)
-1992 (TBII, TV-special, chart success again)

I also have a feeling that TBIII (1998?) was so popular in certain areas that it resulted in renewed interest.

Anyone who falls outside of this? Who found Heaven's Open in a store and was attracted to the sleeve? Who heard Innocent on Peter's pop and was hooked? Who got to hear L&S through the Schiller connection?

I believe I told this story once before: I went to a used record shop in the mid to late 80's and looked for the oldest vynil they had, it was Incantations. So I bought it and still have it now.  :)

Not sure of exact dates but it was around 74/5, and I was visiting my aunt & uncle's home for a birthday. I was about 11 at the time.

Not owning a record player back then I was rather bemused at the LP collection of my cousin. I was particularly attracted to the TB cover as it was so abstract and different from the norm. I had no idea who Mike Oldfield was, being brought up at the time on a diet of Sweet, Alvin Stardust, LedZep and Sabbath.

So I asked my cousin if she would play it on her record player, and I was immediately entranced.

The rest is history, as they say :)
