Does Mike Oldfield use two electric guitars for the "guitar duet" in "Guitars Sounding Like Bagpipes"?  Is one of them the Fender Telecaster (the main electric guitar on Tubular Bells) and the other the Futurama II guitar?

(The Futurama II was one of Mike's first electric guitars given to him by his father circa 1964/65.)  :)  :)

If you're talking about TB 1973, as far as I know the Telecaster is the only electric guitar that Mike O. used on the whole record. Also, I think it's at least three parts in there, all played with the same guitar.

Mike himself doesn´t seem to be to sure whether or not it was his only electric on Tubular Bells. Around 1991 he mentioned that it had been his "main" electric guitar.

I don´t think he still had either the Eko or the Futurama then.

I think the lines we are reading between are getting closer together. (:))  The other electric could have been a Bass for example, but who knows, he could have had the use of any other guitar lying arround in the Manor when he recorded TB1.  My interprestation is that the Tub1 Tele was his main guitar that he used to create Tubular Bells. 1.  'Main' meaning the main instrument as mike is a guitarist, as opposed to the other stringed instruments like Bass etc.,  The Steinway was probably the main piano! (Ha!;)

I will try to find out exactly what the situation was - but look at the cover of the original TB album - does it say under instruments - Mike played electric guitar or electric guitars??  I havnt got it with me so I can't look.

Also when it was played live - recently released on video(DVD) with Steve Hillage etc., what did mike play - Bass I think, the other guitars were ???? - the reason for there being more than one was due to the Album being over dubbed.  Can some one not ask Tom Newman, he seem to have a good memory

Craig - Do you have a particular interest in the Tub1 Tele?

rGrds      Ray  (Good challenging discussion that needs a bit of home work!!;)

The cover says electric guitar, singular, but it also lists "speed electric guitar" for part 2 (as well as "guitar sounding like bagpipes", as a separate entry).

There's also a "fuzz guitar" mentioned for part 1, which to me would sound like an electric instrument (but then again, I know little of guitars, being a keyboards-guy myself).

A key board - thats a guitar with lot of plectrums in a big box isnt it???     :O
But yes I think it is Guitar singular and the others are like bagpipe guitars - ie a guitar played down a hover hose !!!! or something.  So I still think the main Guitar he referes to is the Telecaster - he was rather poor at that time so couldnt afford lots of guitars and had to loan most of the instruments in any case, which if Richard Branson was involved wouold have been begged borrowed and possible half hitched form somewhere - in fact Mike bought some of the instruments I understand after Tub 1 took off - as the manor probably had to get some newer ones!!!  All good fun by the sounds of it. Craig - Do you have a particular interest in the Tub1 Tele?

Eventhough I am refering to the original "1973 Tubular Bells 1" in this post I am using the "2003 Tubular Bells 1" track names for easy reference.

I am interested in the Telecaster because I like the range of very cool sounds that Mike Oldfield uses from the Tele on different layers of the "Tubular Bells 1" tracks.

When used for rhythm work the tele has growly tones for the rhythm guitars on Part 1s "Basses" and "Thrash" and Part 2s "Harmonics rhythm work", "Piltdown Man rhythm work", "Ambient Guitars rythem work" and the "Sailor's Hornpipe rhythm chords" and the bassline in Part 1s "Finale".

When used for lead work the tele also produces smooth alto tones for the "Double speed guitar" tracks such as Part 1s "Blues", "Jazz" and Part 2s "Harmonics", "Peace Mandolin" and "Bagpipe guitars", and the reverbed double speed guitar in the "Sailor's Hornpipe" (by the way this is more clearer in the boxed edition mix).

Mike Oldfield also explores the teles soprano tones in dramatic guitar solo work on tracks such as Part 1s "Fast Guitars" and Part 2s "Piltdown Man" and "Ambient Guitars".

Of course there many more brillient examples from both the tele and the other instruments!! ;)  ;)

Whilst I enjoy all of Mike Oldfield's music I feel that the "1973 Tubular Bells 1" has a very unique and original sound to it which Mike Oldfield draws into various sound layers from his mind, the Fender Telecaster electric gutars and the other instruments.

I also feel that the "Guitars Sounding Like Bagpipes" sound is very rare and cool eventhough it evolves into the cool "Thunderstorms" on "Hergest Ridge Part 2" and the start of "Ommadawn Part 2".  :)  :)
