I got the War Of The Worlds Live DVD for christmas and I was really impressed with the mix of live music and on-screen visuals. The musicians are fantastic and the set-up reminded me of an Oldfield concerts- Loads of musicians and even FULL STRING ORCHESTRA conducted by the man himself, Jeff Wayne.

Despite being a 1-trick pony (this is the only album he has ever released, albeit RE-RELEASED millions of times- way more than the original TB re-issues) I think the music and the concept is fantastic and up there with Oldfield compositions.

Do you agree?

I love the album, i have'nt seen the new DVD yet, but i really like the music. And it's not the only album he has released, he released another album in the early 90's i think that had Cathering Zeta Jones singing on it.

I Love war of the worlds!!!!!!!!

I have the cd by Jeff Wayne :D

Great!!!

And I bought it because Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues sings on 2 tracks, and I'm a big fan of them
of course the other tracks are beautiful too! Like the Red Weed and Dead London

last week was in interview on tv with Wayne about all this :)

Saw the show live last year at Newcastle Arena , seeing the show live this year at the O2 dome London.
Jeff wayne also brought out his musical version of spartacus but in all honesty I'm not a fan of it.

It's odd how life draws things together. I was browsing the WOTW site 2 days ago, fascinated by the CGI stuff. There is a great on-line book there about the making of the album, I definitely recommend it. Then played the album to my kids who loved it.

Then this thread - great minds think alike.

This album still holds so many memories, great tunes and a beat that is still relevant today. Just like many of Mikes works it stands the test of time and a new audience.

I bought the re-released album (remastered and repackaged) version just a few months ago and it was the first time I had really heard it. I described it in another thread. It is a beautifully presented 2 cd set with a very well illustrated booklet (which I imagine was all the original artwork) and I recall finding a Mike Oldfield connection with Chris Thompson from Manfred Manns Earth Band playing 'the Voice of Humanity', who also appeared on Mikes album 'Earth Moving'. They had reasonably detailed bios in the booklet of all the artists involved in the project and I counted no less than 26 artists (including Britney Spears! ) mentioned in Chris' bio as being people he has worked with but no mention of Mike at all which was disappointing. Are people actually embarrassed to admit they have worked with Mike rather than being proud? That is a serious question.

Having been a fan of the book by H.G. Wells, I was intrigued about the musical version by Jeff Wayne, something my Mum had always been fond of. She introduced it to me and I listened to it, and I really loved it, especially that anthemic beginning (On The Eve of War). It really is something special, and in its own way similar to Mike's works.

Had some very amusing drug-filled college stories around War of the Worlds...a sentimental favorite.

Also recall beng unable to sleep the first night I ever listened to it.

I've had the album since it first came out. I purchased the Master version of the LP, way back when. I now enjoy the CD version. I remember playing it for my sons when they were very young, and they loved it. (they were about 6-8 years old at the time. And they are also big MO fans as well!;). We would play it from begining to end (I used to make cassette tapes of WotW to play on long trips), and my youngest son would cower in the back seat, silently terrified every time he head the Martians go "UUUUULLAAAAAAA!". Ah, those were the days.

I'd love to get my hands on the new release and DVD, just to see what they've done to it over the past 20 years.

My older bro had the original vinyl LP with the big book and the big scary paintings...Its a great album, with an amazing cast of people on it,though at the time I found it very frightening to listen to.....Forever Autumn is one of my all time favourite songs..classic.

One of mine too. Though I only have an old vinyl copy.

The whole album has an incredible atmosphere. Spooky, eerie and cold. Really great guitars and vocals. But it's the story, the words chosen, the incredibly strong images that are conjured, the idea of an invasion, that has the power for me. I must get hold of a copy of the dvd to see how it works visually.

Yep, I love it too. My parents many years ago never did find out how their sofa was broken (me, "Brave new world", "Imagine the destruction of all that you despise" and bit of overenthusiasm :)

I love this album too!
This album is probably one of my earliest musical memories..my mum used to play it and I would flick through the booklet and get completely drawn into the world that this great combination of artists had created..
What a classic...
I just brought tickets to see the live show here in Melbourne...can't wait..I cant believe Justin Hayward is coming out too..awesome
