In my opinion Mike was mad to sell Througham slad. Out of all the houses he has lived in I like this the most from the images I have seen. It is absolutley beautiful, everything I would love in a place in the country myself. The studio, the grounds and the architecture. Now he ends up in Spain.....!!!! Nothing against Spain but for me the English Countryside is for me.

I think Mike has always found it hard to settle down. I still don't think he will stay where he is now.

On Changeling,he regrets the fact he has sold it...he bought for a bargain and the last time it was for sale,it costed about £ 5,5 million :O

Well I don`t think Mike will settle in Spain either, although he has lived out there before so he obviously knows what he wants. For the time being at least anyway.Maybe Fanny is happier living out there as well I don`t know?I just think some of the reasons he gave for leaving nanny state and the weather etc were a little bit too predictable. You know you hear of a lot of people leaving citing those reasons as their sole incentives. And then they kind of forget a little bit about the "soul incentive" for being here in the first place I suppose. And quite a number of people do tend to come back it has to be said.

And then that quote of Mike`s "The country I loved does`nt exist anymore" kind of thing. You know for a guy that is so obviously insular anyway and with the amount of money he has I honestly don`t see why that would be a problem to him anyway.Short of buying himself a tardis and transporting himself to the prologue of Lord Of The Rings what else does the bloke want?Just as long as he does`nt end up being transported to the satanic industrial landscape of Sheffield or somewhere like that by mistake of course. Those tardis devices really are prone to go anywhere at times.I just wish they`d stop going to quarries and abandoned power stations and do us all a favour.

I think the main house for the Oldfield's is in Monaco, and Palma de Mallorca, a second residence.

Yep I agree I love the English countryside, the countryside around Kington/Hergest Ridge is beautiful, oh how much I'd like to live there      :) .

I agree with Ian the English countryside is for me , I've got English blood running through my veins :) , I don't think I could permaently live anywhere else, apart from Wales maybe.  It's complete idiocy that residents of Gladestry on the Welsh side of Hergest Ridge don't  have to pay for their prescriptions, but residents of Kington  about 3 miles east in England have to pay, unless they have an exemption certificate.

I happened to find this page the other day, this  is what then Home Secretary Jack Straw thinks of English people http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/596717.stm

OK yes maybe if the only image  seen is one of football hooligans on the rampage, but that's just a small minority of English people.    Yes when the Home Sectretary comes out with remarks like that  then I can see what contempt he has for anyone English.   Why is being proud to be English considered "racist" , Irish peole celebrate thier Irishness, and Americans celebrate being American , but I wouldn't say that's racist.

I think along with others who feel the same I just want to put the Great back into Britain, as Britain seems to have lost it's identity somewhat.

I'm going slightly mad,
It finally happened, I'm slightly mad , just very slightly mad

If you feel a little glum to Hergest Ridge you should come.

This afternoon my daughters and myself took to the North Yorks moors in the motor, we drove mainly in the areas in and about westerdale, rosedale and farndale, stopping here and there to stretch the old leg's. I'll have to say it was a privellage just be among  such searingly stunning a backdrop's. The moors are I consider on my doorstep and we had today the luxury of a few spare hours with nothing other to do but look and admire. In all honesty I feel too the countryside of the UK is  without a doubt breathtaking .

Part of the reason for Mike leaving Througham Slad was that a Squadron of KC135 Stratotankers was due to take up residence at the nearby RAF Fairford base. Reputed to be, at the time, the world's noisiest aircraft, they would cause a nuisance to any acoustic recordings. With little or no sound insulation within the main barn studio conversion this would obviously limit its use. Mike was trying to get his studio to be used on a more commercial basis, so it became a flaw in the business plan. Despite his protests to Whitehall the US Air Force moved in during 1979.

And if you want to buy it it is for sale at 5.5 Million

Througham Slad Manor, Gloucestershire

This Grade II* listed house is of huge architectural importance. Originating from the mid to late 16th century, the house is constructed of Cotswold stone under a tiled roof with its original stone mullion windows and leaded lights. Large open fireplaces, fine panelling, Gothic windows, a wonderful dovecote and delicate lead guttering give the manor its unique charm.

The oak front door leads to an entrance porch and reception hall with Cotswold stone flagged floor and restored elm panelling. The study has original stripped oak floor boards and the drawing room, within the oldest part of the house, has exposed beams, a wonderful large open fireplace and three window seats overlooking the gardens.

The kitchen/breakfast room is a wonderful large family kitchen with oak floor boards, shuttered stone mullion windows and an Aga. Upstairs there are seven bedrooms, all with bathrooms. The gardens at Througham Slad take fullest advantage of the exceptional setting of the house and include formal lawns and a walled garden and water cascade. The property also includes a swimming pool, two cottages and outbuildings. 'Througham Slad Manor is the quintessential Cotswold manor house; recently refurbished to an immaculate standard, the house has excellent rooms and sits in a stunning and peaceful valley,' says Will Matthews from Knight Frank country department.

Guide price £5.5 million.

For further details and/or to make an appointment please contact Will Matthews on +44 (0)20 7861 144.

How is this pronounced? I want to say "throm shlod" (rhymes with 'bomb squad' ), but that can't be right.
