I was teaching a course the other day when I mentioned guitar strings as a way of explaining an engineering topic to do with drilling oil wells and I just thew in the comment - that if any one wanted thery could think if Mike Olkdfield's Guitar strings - that reaction from several members of the class was quite interesting.

One guy said - Oh I used to live in a legal Squat in London and Tom Newman lived next door so i got to know him a bit - this was in the 70's.

Another guy - said it was amazing how 1970's prog rock got into an engineering course.

we had a fun few minutes off topic - it just amazed me how many people knew of Mr O - and some new quite a lot.

Coooool!!!

hehe... really nice!

I am a teacher and at sometime I let the kids hear some music and they had to say which instrument they were hearing. I let them hear Marooned by PinkFloyd, and I expected the kids to say 'it's a guitar!' or 'electric guitar' ...

One boy raised his and and said: 'Gibson, sir' !!!

My mouth went like this:  :O  :O
and the kid was a favourite of mine the rest of the year!!

Quite interesting to see this discussion for I had an email from Tom a couple of weeks ago in which he mentioned his recent work with kids on the Pirates for Peace project in Northern Ireland:

"yo chris, great, and thanks for thinking of us, i'm doing a remake of tub bells here with catholic and protestant children playing it all, 800 kids so far! will be finished around xmas, will keep you informed, ship ok, have a new website being created at the moment , will be v comprehensive, ready in 6 weeks. give my love to all the guys out there, hope to remake contact with them all soon, been v busy, excuse my negligence. all the best tom xx"
