Primo Vere (= at the beginning of spring, in Latin) is me and a friend of mine who plays guitar. He is the writer of this tune. We released a CD of our music at the beginning of August, this is the only instrumental piece in it - the others are all sung. (The piece itself, and the recording, are over a year old.) The title, which is literally translated in the title of this topic, is based on a Jackson Browne album and its cover - just the title, not the piece!! :D It's a very simple piece, and it's not Oldfieldian at all - so maybe it's a little bit out of place here. :) However, download it here  and tell me what you think about this. All kinds of feedback are appreciated. ;)

Quiet and gentle... Maybe it sounds a bit too electronic, but it's a very nice piece :-)

Thanks, Wayfarer. The electronic feel depends largely on the Roland 808-style beat. :) However, my friend liked that... ;)

P.S. If you or other people want to hear more off the album, just tell me. ;)

Hi Ugo,

I just thought all the time that you are only a music listener. I don’t know that you are a musician too. Now I know it!! :)

It’s a very romantic track! When I listen to it I thought for myself all the time to be on a beach, walking with a beautiful girl on warm sand, feel the warm Mediterranean air, watching the seagulls flying in the air and being in love!!

One tip from my side: The doubled layer guitar in the track, especially in the beginning is not so good. I think it’s a guitar from the keyboard and a hand played guitar I just listen, isn’t it? I think a dominating one acoustic guitar, hand played, sounds much better.

That’s not a critic from my side only just a hint from me to you.  ;)

Greetings to Italy :)

@ Jörg: thanks for your comments. I and my friend (whose name is Marco, by the way) had in mind completely different images for the piece, but yours are nice as well. :)

About the double guitar: yes, I admit that there are discrepancies. But this can be easily explained: being our very first proper recording, Marco was sort-of afraid (I don't know whether or not I'm using the right word, here) to play the guitar solo part all on his own, so he asked me to play the same part on the keyboard, to back him up. However, when the piece gets to the third verse [or to the part which would be the third verse in an ordinary song! :D], he plays on his own, and I come back for the ending chorus. It was intended to be like this. But I can guarantee that on our next recordings he'll have enough confidence to play guitar without any need for me to back him up. :)

P.S. Do any of you want to listen to a sung piece?

OK - for Ben and all others, here's "Io vivo di musica" (= I live on music), a pseudo-rock song ["pseudo" meaning that it's almost entirely played on a keyboard, with a barely audible acoustic guitar on top... :)] written and sung by me.

Here is the song...

...and here are the lyrics, and the translation. [I know this is silly, but I haven't (yet) got my own website. :D]

So... Feedback on the song !

I like the chords in the verse.  The melody is really catchy.  Your singing fits the track well.

I wasn't so sure about the chorus - particularly the notes at the end, where your voice strains.  The keyboard melody is good but it is often too loud - it oftens drowns out your voice.

Guitar solo is pretty good, although as with other parts of the track, I spotted several errors that could probably be fixed with a few additional takes. ;)

Personally, I find it difficult to listen to songs that aren't in English, but that wasn't a huge problem with this track.  Maybe because you've found a strong melody...

Overall, good work Ugo! :)

"I Live On Music" indeed - you've kept that skill hidden for a while Ugo.

All in all, I enjoyed the vocal track, nice strong singing and playing. A little rough around the edges, but that adds to the appeal.

@ Ben: sorry about that, you can get the first song here.
It's Rapidshare, it shouldn't expire so soon. :) About "Io vivo di musica": I agree about the melody being too loud, I shouldn't have played it at all on the keyboard, I should've played just chords. Regarding the guitar solo, yes, there are mistakes, but it was completely improvised - this is a fully live recording with no overdubs, no edits and no sequencing, except for the VA-7 internal arranger module. In spite of having rehearsed the whole thing a jillion times, I still managed to get it wrong somewhere. Oh, well. :) I also agree about my strained voice, but that day it really was strained, and it can be heard in my backings on other songs as well. But it's perfectly understandable, as the whole album was recorded in just two days.

@ Andy: Yes, it's rough, but I can't do anything about it. That's the way I can sing. :) When I do backings, though, I sing a little better. :D

P.S. @ Ben: I don't think I'm going to record vocals on your song, I'm too busy with school. Ask Wayfarer. :)
