When I tried to put together a list of favourite albums recently I was surprised that many of my favourite *tracks* ended up not on the list. I concluded that Albums that work as a whole are a different creature to particularly good tracks.

So, favourite tracks - for whatever reasons - by artists other than Mike. Some of my favourites are for quite personal reasons which might explain some of the weirder entries. I tried this as a top 10 - too many being left off. Top 20? Still too many so I'm going to go for top 40 - feel free to stick to 10 or 20 yourselves. I tried to avoid multiple entries for any one artist which helps to keep the numbers down. My list ends up being all songs but they don't need to be, I am surprised myself that I don't have any instrumental tracks listed (Oxygene nearly made it). I've tried to add links to listen to them for the brave of heart. Advanced warning though, my avatar is cheese for a reason - prepare for some particularly smelly cheese below... Hopefully others will post less cheesy lists to balance things a bit!

Some brief thoughts...

Matt
  • I liked "Youth of Today" a lot. I plan to check out more of Amy MacDonald.
  • I think that's my first exposure to Goldfrapp - it's such a pretty song.

Scatterplot
  • Strange that we both picked "Can You Hear me?". Or not so strange, since it's an awesome song.

Dirk
  • The video for "Mayor of Simpleton" is fun. I'd never seen it before.
  • Seeing "Let 'Em In" has reminded me of "Band On The Run" which I would've added to my list if I'd remembered it.
  • I didn't know Dave Edmunds did "Queen of Hearts". I'd only heard the Juice Newton version.
  • "Sweet Harmony" is really nice. And I'm not just saying that because of the naked people.
  • "You're the Best Thing"... right on!

olrac
  • I'm not familiar with Chris Cornell, but I just watched the video and I'm liking that song.
  • You must really like "Cars" to have listed it twice.

  • Yeah it`s one of their better videos I must admit as most of them don`t really do their songs justice at all.I`m suddenly compeled to link this video by them though.Mainly because it features an apperance from somebody we all know and love here on tubular forums.   ;)

All these years of loving that song and I don`t think I`ve heard that version of it,although I was aware of it.Ok here it is it does stay pretty faithfull to the Dave Edmunds version I guess. The song was wrote by Hank Devito, although I think I`m right in thinking Dave Edmunds was the first guy to put it out on a record.I`ve still yet to hear the Tom Jones version of it though... :/

Oh man that`s just a brilliant "earworm" type song that I`m a real big sucker for I must admit.I read online yesterday that the best known cure for "earworms" is to sing the la la la section of America`s Horse With No Name over and over to yourself until it`s completely purged.Maybe it`s something to do with the naked people, but it does`nt work with that one for me...        :p

Well my favourite Jam song is Precious so I had to go and pick something else did`nt I... ;) The thing is I was never really a big fan of You`re The Best Thing until I got to be best man at a friends wedding about 15 years ago.So anyway the couple in question had this video disc made up for them which was really just a slideshow of images from their respective youths you know. And the soundtrack to it of course was this song by The Style Council(my friend is a big Paul Weller fan)..I was almost in tears watching that thing round at their house one night. And all the while thinking to myself "how the hell did I completely miss the beauty of this song? "..So yeah I kind of stole it from them I guess like the shameless bloody musical magpie I am.

There`s actually a good number of artists listed by other people here that I`m also a big admirer of.People like The Hollies,David Sylvian,Goldfrapp,Pink Floyd,America,Cocteau Twins, just too many names to go into more fully really.I have to say I found it really difficult to whittle it down to 40 songs myself. But anyway a big shout out to OlracUk for listing another New Musik song there, great stuff. So there was four singles released from that New Musik album and we both picked the two that are`nt up on you tube.So guided by the hand of fate and for anyone remotely interested here`s both Living By Numbers and This World Of Water

And would you credit it now that I`ve just done that I`ve also found Sanctuary and Straight Lines  :) All hail youtube!..A veritable minefield of cheese.

I`ve just noticed there are three songs in this thread already from James Bond films..(matt with nobody does it better. And olracuk with You Know My Name & Live And Let Die. ) Which then reminded me that if I`d thought a little bit harder about my favourite Pretenders song here I may well have picked this one

I forgot to mention Sweetpea in referance to that Beloved song earlier.Richard Branson appeared on a tv show many years ago over here, where as part of the show the guests would have to review new music videos. So anyway they played this tune from The Beloved which Branson was full of praise for,and expressed that it reminded him of one of his favourite artists at the time,...David Sylvian.Well he was on the Virgin label I guess heh heh..Say what you like about Branson but you can`t fault the guy`s taste in music sometimes.

Does anyone like Four Jacks and a Jill? They are a South African band; their most well known song is "Master Jack" from 1968. For mostly associational reasons, I'm quite fond of their Master Jack and Fables records, which, though, quite silly in places, are also very melodic and fun! "Timothy" and "Bobby Plays a Blue Note" are high spots, in that they point to that feeling of loss we know so well in the music of Mr Oldfield.
