There are lots of dodgy best of album charts, but this one from UK national radio station Capital FM is actually very accurate, click on the link below for the chart, and goto the end of the page to see how they have made the chart.Mike has a good placing.

It's nice to see Oldfield being placed there for a change. Not by far for his best record, though that's only my opinion. In a sense it's more "scientific" in scope than Rolling Stone's blindly giving out points for time spent on the charts without any other regard for its "importance", "impact". (I assume UK charts? It's hard doing charts. They don't always measure sails correctly)

It might be fun to put them together somehow and see what you get in terms of results.

For me greatest records it's not about sails, not at all. Rolling Stone's wasn't about sails but about other factors, although sails was indicated. Bob Dylan for instance is only placed once here for a "Greatest hits" on nr. 254 and that is, as Bill O´Reilly says, ridiculus.

Wow - that is interesting - it's a list of my album collection!!!!

And - Outch - but I have most in Vinyl too.....

What I think they need to do is normalise it - ie some of the older albums were highly popular despite album sales being lower than they are today - so Dido - is very high up, but everyone buys CD's, in the 1970's propbably lesds people bought Records but Dave Bowie, Meatloaf etc,.,  still appear in this chart - impressive.

That is a good placing indeed for Mike! :D Just too bad others like Enigma, Kraftwerk and Jean-Michel Jarre weren't on the list. But in the end sixth place for Tubular Bells really does cushion the blow quite a bit.  :p

WOW!!!! Tubular Bells at no.6,and deservedly so :D.  Quite a few expected results there and many surprises too. I'm surprised by the absence of  The Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street, possiblythe Stones' finest moment   :D .  Queen's The Works,a great album IMHO the one that got me into Queen is higher placed thanA Night At The Opera.    I find it most baffling how rubbish such as Westlife manage to appear in these charts at all.  Isn't it now the case that albums need to sell fewer copies these days to have a no.1 album than was the case some 30/40 years ago.

It would be interesting to see what positions Ommadawn, and  Hergest Ridge would get to using the CapitalFM method of calculation.   I did expect more Beatles  albums to get higher placings.  I thought St Peppers was the biggest selling album/most weeks on chart.   In another poll, based on UK(so I believe) sales  I read that Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Tubular Bells were in joint 49th place, having sold about 16 million each  :/ ,DSOTM selling fractionally more than TB.

Ranking is based on UK charts, I guess... ;)

Wow, what a great list. Was there any Jimmi Hendrix in there? I counted 51 albums that I have not inc ones that I would have bought if I didn't already have a 'Best Of' by that Artist which already included most of those tracks, like for ex SO by Peter Gabriel. Don't have the album but have practically every song. Isn't it great to see Mike at number 6, finally some recognition. Was surprised to see Aquas Aquarium in there. Just goes to show we give our children way too much pocket moeny! I suppose it shows there IS a place for Britney and the like, anything that gives youngsters an appreciate of music can't be a bad thing, most of them will hopefully find their own niche as they mature. We all have albums we bought in the early days that we are embarrassed about now.

I did find thatUK album sales listing that I originally found,it's located here www.everyhit.com/recordalb.html

Interesting to see that Tubular Bells is in 44th place with 2.1m copies sold inthe UK,and Dark Side of the Moon has sold the same in 49th place, but these must be two of the highest selling albums in the UK. Here Sgt Peppers is the biggest selling album with 4.5m copies sold   :/ .  I do think the Capital FM chart is more accurate.

Here's an interesting study -- how many of the Top 50 albums do you own?  I have only 6.

I just think it's nice to see a list that has had some thought go into it, not just what people thinks is there favourite album.
Just a shame that a greatest hits album got to the top spot and not an original album.

I counted 5 in the top 50, and only 17 in the whole of the top 500 :(

I am sorry.  I am wrong.  I don't have 6, only 5.  There are two Greatest Hits by ABBA in the top 50.  I have one, but not both.

I currently own only 4 (on CD) though I have owned 11. (The missing 7 were never replaced by CDs when I ditched all my vinyl.)

Hmm, 23 in the top 50, another 83 in the rest. But that includes a couple my ex-wife took with her. This includes CD, Vinyl and tape - but no 8-track. I'm not quite that old!  :)

I have 14 of the albums in the top 50.  However, there are some I've owned but chose to sell as I didn't like them (the Oasis albums) and the Beatles "1962-1966" album is just a compilation, so there is no need to own it if you have all the other albums (the same goes for "1967-1970").  There are a couple of slight differences in the tracks but I don't think it's worth buying these compilations just for those.
