Just heard on a Radio Programme that the British Programme
"Top of the Pops" is to be axed from July 30th after 42 Years..
OK theres lots of Dross on it but also it holds some fond memories from the 70s 80s period...... Bit like axing "Blue Peter" or killing Bambi   :D

Oh noooooo!

That's not only a national institution, that's a worldwide institution! Now I'll never get to be on TOTP!

I have read lots of comments on this and I am confused.

Most of the people seem to be unhappy with the decision... but they admit to not watching it anymore!

Declining ratings do not keep a show on the air, regardless of how long it's been running.  If people really cared about TOTP, they would have actually watched it.

Saying "don't kill it!" after the event is just a gut reaction that shows while people don't deal too well with change, when pushed to take action, they don't do anything either.

Inertia is a frustrating thing.

Sure it's one of the longest running TV programmes, but I don't think it'll be that great a loss.

If you think of other television music coverage in Britain, there is more and more coverage of the Glastonbury festival than there was before. We also have Popworld and CDUK.

Replace it with TOTM.

I’m glad to hopefully see the back of it.  To me TOTP ceased to be relevant the time they refused to play God save the queen (which at the time was rumoured to be at the number 1 slot).  It wouldn’t surprise me if the BBC had a hand in cooking the chart figures to keep it off the number 1.
Then to add insult to injury when the pistols did appear on the show sometime later, DJ/host at the time Peter Powell comments how he “felt dirty being in the same studio as them!”  For Christ sake he hadn’t just shook hands with Hitler or Beelzebub.

I do have a fond memory of watching Roger Daltrey sulk while being interviewed on the show, because the Clash were booked to appear and to their credit stuck a good 2 fingers up and left the show high and dry.

Then that was all in the 70’s I’m sure it’s changed since then, but I don’t care.  Anyway I’d sooner not have my licence fee go towards another platform for no talents to spout their pathetic non-talents.

Ahhh better out than in.  I feel better now

Thing is when figures were slowly decreasing they started tempering with the show to make it "more up to date", "please the target" and gods know what else -- and then it just sunk. A bit like when they started to remove the actual chart from the Radio 1 Chart Show and selling 2-track singles for UKP 1.99 instead of 5-tracks for the same price, all in order to "improve" and "satisfy the costumer demands". Why don't the marketing people p*ss off and leave the music alone? It was managing perfectly well until it started being treated as a "product". And how I agree with what Hiawatha says, assuming M stands for Music...

Ugh. I'm becoming a grumpy old man. But I'm really really longing for the times when music was a thing to be loved and enjoyed instead of "product". And don't even get me started on Sandi Thom.

I think they should replace it with a weekly musical show featuring ONLY mike oldfield where he can play new songs, old ones and teach us how to meditate and roll our own cigarettes with a pint of ale in one hand...

No???????????????????????????????????????

I'll give you one guess. Which of the two is Mike Oldfield song related?

Do you know, I hadn't actually spotted that.

(Surprising, because I've always liked that mantlepiece song.)

I try to avoid listening to pop anyway, so even if I had it on available I doub't I'd miss it.
