Has anyone ever made a tubular bell in that shape?  What would it sound like?

Hey! Long time no see :)
I did think about it for a while, going to this store where they sell metallic stuff (don't know the exact word), and to ask them to create an iron tube in this shape. I never made this plan reality though...
But about the sound. I think it would make no other sound than a dull *kloing*, with not much resonanse and certainly it won't sound like a bell of course.
But it would look very cool on the wall, indeed!  :D
I think I might put my plan to practise one day!

If it helps, I have made an 'exact' 3D model of the Bell that might help when specifying what you want, i.e. show some pictures of this to the metal worker to give him an idea.

I once started this very thread a while ago asking for help on how to make a tubular bell like that on the album covers . The best advice i got was to try and make it out of stainless steel pipe like they use on car exhaust systems because it is easy to shape with the help of a pipe bender , a gas torch and a little know how and also stainless still polishes up really great ..

From how I understand it I wouldn't say its 'easy' to make using a pipe jig. Easy to bend yes but you have to get the steel to such a temperature that it doesn't kink when you bend it, thats the tricky part and thats where getting someone with a bit of experience comes in.

Send in some pics if you get one made.  Good luck

I was saw a tv show where they were bending pipe.  They filled it with sand so that it wouldn't kink as it was being bent.

I think it sounded like that awful "klunk" sound in the Orchestral Tubular Bells.  :p

Hello, glad to see this thread arise again.

I'm the one that had made one of these bells from stainless steel exhaust tubing. It didn't sound too bad, but it wasn't quite right. It wasn't designed to sound good, just look good.

I got rid of my bell many years ago (probably about 25-30 years ago or so), but at the time I was curious to see if I could make one, and worked in an auto repair shop at the time. So I thought I'd give it a shot. My bell turned out to be about 24" from bend to bend. Looked nice, but the chrome began flaking off after a few years. (Don't use SS if you inted to chrome it). And as I said it didn't really work well as a bell, more for decoration.
