Cool, although I seem to have mislaid the odd £1,000 i need to buy them..and I'm not sure they would fit in my garage anyway. Oh well, back to bashing out the tune on old saucepans then.

I knew that the bells on the tbII album were samples but I thought the ones from the tour were not.

How exactly do they function? I guess they do create some sound themselves and it is not only a midi sound or why else should they be so large ... you see I am confused so please help me out.

And I also wonder how come Mike decided to sell them? Seems like he is not planning to do another concert with bells...

They're don't seem to be the same bells that were used in 1998-1999. So I suspect he sold them after the tour in 1993.

I gather that you strike the bells at the top to get the best sound, but these are at least 8ft tall. How did Mike play them?

There are some even bigger midi tubular bells that Mike plays at the end of the TB3 concert. If it isn't just for show why do they need to be so large?

I think that the TB3 concert bells are fake, i.e. "just for show". :)

Not being a musician, I always thought MIDI was used to trigger events/other machines. So striking the bells, although they would make thier own sound, would maybe trigger other synths/sequencers?

The TB111 bells were definitly fake, along with the wine glasses, just used for visual effect. The bells on the "later.." video almost seem tin Foil wrapped.

@ Andy: The bells on the set played by the percussionist (Alastair Malloy?) in the TBIII show are most probably a trigger for the synthesized bell sounds, but they may as well produce their own sound, though it's rather obviously not as loud and 'powerful' as the synthy one. :D And Korgscrew told me that the wine glasses do have a sound, although it's very low in the mix. :)

@ ATTMO: The video Andy was mentioning is "Later with Jools Holland", though I have no idea on where to find it. :)

Did the wine glasses in TB3 have more than a visual significance if they produced a sound? Surely there wasn't a wave to midi converter in each glass, or maybe they could have been heavily miked up to a single midi converter

@ Jammer: AFAIK the table that they were standing on was the 'thing' that made the glasses sound by catching their vibrations, or something like that. :) Also, please don't worry about that video. The 'where to find it' thing here above wasn't referred to me. :)

Oh, my God!!!!!  :O  :O  :O

The bid has ended at 1,019.00 GBP = 1,463.55 EUR!!!

Well, maybe you don't know it, but a brand new similar set of tubular bells, one "not-ever-being-played-by-Mike-Oldfield" does cost about 4,000 (yeah, FOUR THOUSAND) euros.

Even if you're just a percussionist and not an Oldfield fan, it's half the price of a new set. And indeed a very good offer.

Gosh... If I'd had knew about it before the end of the bidding...  :/
