Hi there. A friend of mine told me that Mike Oldfield did a press conference somewhere and when someone handed him a guitar, he played an amazing acoustic version of tubular bells. Does anyone know anything about this, and does anyone know where i could find a tab, and a copy of the song???? much appreciated, JOE.  :O

I've heard him do Sentinel on acoustic guitar (segued into Anji). I've worked out an arrangement based on that. The version I play of it is slightly different to Mike's, being a tiny bit more tricky, but I can probably help you out with a tab if you want. I might be able to get round to making a recording of it too at some point.

I have a few things roughly worked out for playing Tubular Bells on solo guitar too, but I've never heard Mike play it himself (apart from just simply playing the opening melody).

There's a sketch of the opening here

I'd advise caution in playing it - if you've not played classical guitar in the past, you may find that stretch from 5 up until 10 is more than you're used to. Playing it without properly warming up is not a good idea. I can see another way of fingering it that would be less hazardous, but this is the way I play it, and you wanted the tab quickly, so...

Further advice, as I don't know how much experience you have: it should be played with the thumb of the fretting hand behind the neck of the guitar. You won't manage that stretch if you have the thumb wrapped around the neck in rock fashion. It also helps to hold the guitar in a position where the neck is at a fairly high angle - the classical guitarist's position with the guitar between the legs is helpful in achieving that.

Note how the pedal note (E on 2nd string, 5th fret) shifts in relation to the bass note - it starts off coming between the bass notes, but shifts mid-bar to being on the same beat. Mike drops that pedal note at that point, I prefer to keep it going (as shown in the tab), but doing so makes it a little more tricky to get your head around. I will work on the other section when I have time, and may also see if I can do a rough recording of it.

cheers Korgscrew, this tab is alot of fun. The stretch from 5 to 10 is fine for me, but it's probably my maximum (luckily) :p . I see what you mean about the bass note alos, it tends to throw you off a bit with the shift, but it's jus one of those things to get used to. I'm lookin forward to further installments, lol. cheers.

I remember having an acoustic version of the entire Tubular Bells, but it wasn't by Mike. I seem to remember it being by a spanish guy? It's probably not the one you mean, but it was quite impressive anyway. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

That is the "Duo Sonare" version.

"In the land of the Dacotahs,
Where the Falls of Minnehaha
Flash and gleam among the oak-trees,
Laugh and leap into the valley."

I can remember Mike playing a short acoustic version of Tubular Bells during the press conference in Hamburg for the European Leg of his tour in 1993.

After that he answered a couple of questions from the audience and afterwards the record company played the German version of The Bell feat. MC Otto.

Does that help anything?
