That's probably something we'll never know for sure. I'd say it probably just felt right to Trevor Key. It's a very surreal image (especially with the burning bones), but I think it fits very well with the album. It's a little reminiscent of some of René Magritte's work - bells were a recurring image in his work (though they were a different kind of bell - spherical objects with a slit in them, like the kind found on sets of sleigh bells), as was sky. Indeed, his painting 'Castle in the Pyrenees' shows a similar scene with waves and sky with an object floating above it (albeit a rock with a castle, rather than anything metallic). Whether Magritte was an inspiration to Trevor Key or not, I don't know - I've found it very difficult to find information on his work; some on his work as a music photographer is available, but I've yet to find any examples of his photographs of metallic objects which Mike has mentioned.
