That's probably something we'll never know for sure. I'd say it probably just felt right to Trevor Key. It's a very surreal image (especially with the burning bones), but I think it fits very well with the album.
It's a little reminiscent of some of René Magritte's work - bells were a recurring image in his work (though they were a different kind of bell - spherical objects with a slit in them, like the kind found on sets of sleigh bells), as was sky. Indeed, his painting 'Castle in the Pyrenees' shows a similar scene with waves and sky with an object floating above it (albeit a rock with a castle, rather than anything metallic).
Whether Magritte was an inspiration to Trevor Key or not, I don't know - I've found it very difficult to find information on his work; some on his work as a music photographer is available, but I've yet to find any examples of his photographs of metallic objects which Mike has mentioned.

I went to see a superb exhibition of Magritte's paitings in Edinburgh a couple of years ago and the similarity between the TB cover and the 'Castle in the Pyrenees' painting struck me then to. The TB cover is genius, it sits alongside 'Darkside of the Moon' as two of the best album covers ever I think.

The new version has grown on me a lot I have to say. At first I thought it was just a bit to 'newagey' and it also reminded me of those Ibiza chillout albums you alway's see in the charts. But now I like it, looks quite dynamic and I do hope for this reason it reflects the music inside. It'll be interesting to see what they've done with the rest of it, whether they've re-done the flamming bones. I hope they keep the surreal quality of the original.

It'll also be interesting to see whether the've put a little amusing instruction on the back as in the much loved 'old tin boxes' joke on the original. I hope they have, TB2 lost out in this aswell. Maybe Warners just don't have a sence of humor.
