Why is the Tubular Bell on the album cover bent into this fancy shape?
Did they want it to look like the letters MO, or what?

I can just quote the Tubular Bells III CD insert:

"Tubular Bell (talking about the cover) conceived by Mike Oldfield"

He probably dreamed it that way on one of his TB fantasies wink

Although I don't know for sure. If someone has more info on this (probably someone who has read a book on Mike Oldfield) please post.

He probably just liked the shape. I know I do.

Sure, but the shape must have come from somewhere. You don't like the shape of something without seeing it first, at least in some dream. And that's the question. Where did he see it or how did he conceive it. It's obvious he likes the shape we all know that.

Tom Newman Interview
David Porter
24th August, 1997

Transcribed by David Porter.

Q: There is a lot of discussion about the cover of that album. What do you know about the famous twisted bell of Trevor Key's?

Trevor showed us his portfolio and one of the shots he had was an egg with blood coming out of it and that was a very strong contender from Richard's point of view. I can't honestly remember how the Tubular Bell arrived. Michael liked the idea of having some reference, because he was really excited by the way the end piece had gone and liked that great big 'doiung'. When Trevor went on the photo session he went down to Hastings beach (or Eastbourne), with these flaming bones (Sue Steward who wrote Trevor's obituary in The Independent newspaper should know more - I'm almost sure she went on the photo session). The original bell was stolen some years ago from Trevor's studio - it was beautiful - about 18 inches to 2 feet across, the tubing about an inch and a half diameter. It was actually quite expensive to make because bending tubing of that size was difficult. He had to remake it for the 'Tubular Bells II' thing and I can't remember whether they made another one or it was computerised. I've got a feeling, knowing Trevor - he would have made another one.

Thanks to you all! There is a "Question to Mike" poll on this site, but we mustn't ask "Why"-questions frown. Any ideas?

Mike refuses to answer "why" questions. I don't why. I've left the question asking why...

In this poll there's the question "Do you sing cars or chaos in On Horsback ?"

I thought this question has been resolve :

Anyway....earlier this year, we learned from Mike himself that On Horseback is "chaos" and not "cares." Perhaps we can eventually get the scoop on coump, too!

Quoting Mary-Carol on TW Forum, about Foreign Affair Lyrics...

You don't have to ask "why" to find out how the shape originated. Just ask "how did you come up with the shape?"

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic, but I got a really good laugh when I looked at this and the commercial at the top (for a credit card) said 'It does not get better than Platinum!'

Ewll, I think, the thing that makes that shape so beautiful is that there´s no meaning about it, i mean it has no reference to any ideology, idea or inner state. I think that´s the thing that makes the Tubular Bells icon so attractive and interesting.

I've changed my mind. I think the shape of Tubular Bells is a long body turned to a cross. It describes how we are a straight line but life makes us bend. We are Tubular Bells.
