40 years of 'Tubular Bells'. Dead easy: a 'Tubular Bells IV' for 2013. Yes, or not?

Do you think there would be reasons strong enough for a fourth (and last?? or not??) chapter of the grandest musical saga in the history of modern music?

Yeah sure why not.
As long as its not a remake of the Original.

He did say once that the MB would be the last album to feature a bell, But Mike is known to change his mind on occasion  :)

Gus if he made a sequel to Amarok he'd have to change the morse code to "RB's not that bad really"

TB 4
Amarok II
Taurus 4 ????

As long as he keeps making music I'm happy either way.

I really don't mind. I would definitely buy Tubular Bells IV. I really love Tubular Bells II, I like it more than the original album. For me Tubular Bells III doesn't really come together as a whole album, it just feels more like a collection of mediocre songs (there are a some highlights- more or less the last half of the album).

I just don't know how much more mileage Mike can get from that little piano riff. He can invert a note here and there (Music of the spheres), put it in 4/4 (Tubular Bells III), put it in a major key (Tubular Bells II), and even allude to it in clever ways (the Boat section of Amarok) but it all comes down to the same thing: it IS Tubular Bells.

The reason I mention Amarok is that it (other than perhaps the Boat section) is one of few albums that contains NO references to Tubular Bells (Incantations is another) and has so many ideas that are unique to that album and that album alone- lots of things he could do with those melodies. As we all know, Tubular Bells made appearances on Crises, Taurus II, Five Miles Out, etc, etc.

End it with a Trilogy!

Mike made a statement against virgin with TB2 and got his first album for warners to #1 (Would love to hear the Tom Newman production before Trevor Horn got in the mix)

Tubular Bells 3 was so far removed from the original that it seemed wrong to call it by the same name
would have been a great stand alone album..no need to fall into the "Tubular Bells" trap that has been pinned on Mike ( But it works....another successfull album)

Mike has had huge success all over Europe, he's so much more than silver hanging cylindrical tubes.

Give us Amarok 2 (ommadawn 3)...give us Taurus IV (please)

You can call it "Tubular Bellls IV" if you want ...well i dont care...i still think your F*****G awesome!

PS. i need stop visiting this forum when drunk

Voted for a IV - and I disagree that III was removed from the original or boring.  Found it close enough and my favourite of the three, followed by II and then I (yes, I am one of the fans who don't have the original in my top 10 list - or do I - hmm).

I love III as well, I also agree its not toI removed from the original, it has many TB themes running throughout albeit in different areas.
Hardly mediocre at all IMO.

Pour me a round Sawney

Sorry, I just find tracks like The Watchful Eye, Jewel in the Crown, Outcast, and the Inner Child to be a bit underwhelming. Those are the main tracks I dislike. The others I like, especially Secrets/Far above the clouds.

Fair point, I always listen to his albums as a whole and judge them as such.
I think the album flows quite well, but as stand alone tracks I tend to agree.

Just wanted to cut in there... I think africa II, climax II is also quite obviously a reference to TB, with the melody line and the tubular bells...

Harmonically that part has nothing in common with Tubular Bells, but rhythmically it does suggest the repeating bass line from during the "finale" section of Part 1 (where the instruments are announced). A very similar melody to what appears in this part of Amarok also shows up later on in "The wind chimes".

When the tubular bells come in on the Africa II climax (where it transposes to E major) that part also has nothing to do with the album Tubular Bells in terms of melody...but the instrument being used is an obvious reference.

yesyes, I know it is not the same harmonically, just the choice of instruments and type of arrangement, and yes i agree with that in the wind chimes too. I like these subtle references, it gives the listener a little bit of "you know what I mean" from Mike.

That the third happened, and the idea and image was referenced again the year after means it's not impossible, but it seems unlikely.  Granted, the 21 tracks he managed in 1998-99 are proof he could knock up a IV lickety-split, but it looks as though the rock album is the only one on the cards and that doesn't seem the best fit for the concept.  They are always Mike's decisions of course, so the appropriate circumstances may arise.  II (or parts 3 and 4) was on several peoples' minds for years, but he was initially just trying to take ownership of 'Dance' Tubular Bells when the ideas for III kicked in.

Perhaps when he awards first prize in the remix competition to Transient Techno Tubular Bells Super Wildstyle Mix we'll see the sea change that heralds the fully-computerised IV. ;)
