Hi all,
I've been listening to MO's music since he published Five Miles  Out. I have all his records and really love very much his music.
Sometimes it's difficult for me to "understand" some of his music. I don't like at the first listenning (as it occurred to me when I bought Amarok, for instance, and now it's one of my favourite) but after some tries, I get in and love his music.
I have been listening for TUBULAR BELLS for years now, and I still don't "understand" it. Just I cannot get in.
IMHO, there's no " musical continuity" between parts I and II, and part II sounds to me as an assembled piece made of little music bits picked here and there...
I'm sad to say that Idon't like TB part II because almost people says that it's his greatest work.
I know I have my own personality and I'm  not obliged to think as "people" do, but...
     I wolud like to "understand"...

     Any clues  ???

Have you tried it with alcohol yet? No, that's not a joke again about my Belgian beer, I'm serious. I didn't really understand the quieter part just before Sailor's Hornpipe, but since I've heard it while not being quite sober it's one of my favourits. Same with Heaven's Open.

And if you don't drink, no problem. You should try it when you are in very different moods then. If you are very sad: put it on. If you are very happy: put it on. If you haven't slept well: put it on. If you are excited: put it on. If you have an ordinary day: don't put it on. It works for me! ;)

Are you talking about Tubular Bells part 2(the second half of the first album) or Tubular Bells 2 (the whole album)?

Might have something to do with the fact that part I was recorded in one entire sessions, but part II was recorded in several parts, whenever there was free studio time from other artists.

Personally I've never had any trouble getting into part II though.

To my ears, Part I seems much more like an "assembled piece made of little music bits picked here and there", but I think that was just the intention. The different sections in part II are fewer, longer, and IMO, they flow better than in Part I, even. Not that I'm dissing Part I or II individually, I never treat TB like two different parts, rather then a whole. Wow, opinions can be really different, eh?

Yes, they can be different as for me there's  a clear end in part I, and I think that part I and II are very different.
       I just don't " understand" part II...
       I'll try harder ...

I think Mike had more satisfaction in Part 2, because he had a longer period to make it. I think it resembles a lot of emotions of Mike. I really love it (especially on the Knebworth video).

in 'side b', i love the way he makes one go up and down, starting with those wonderful wavy harmonics, the wistful mood carried by the mandolins goes on to 'peace' (u are right Blue Dolphin, it's great in knebworth... imho the best video of him. would be so good to have this in dvd btw...)
later, the drum beating as a heart helps increasing tension till it explodes with the piltdown man supported by crazy electrical guitars... there's a great liberation feeling there leading to the ambient guitars, bit whose beauty imo is highlighted for the fact that it comes out from a powerful storm. it's like the place to rest after being brain-bombed or something...

i find "more sense" and much more emotion in 'side b' than in 'side a', it's wilder and innermost.
if i had to interpretate it for what i listen to, i'd say 'side a' is day and 'side b', night... outside and inside.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Tubular Bells either, but Part One seems to me a lot more complete than Part Two. But, I haven't listened to Part Two all the way through for ages, so I'll need to do that again soon. The time I first really got into Tubular Bells was when I was listening to it in the car when it was raining. Seeing the rain through the windows, and the soft rain sound really suited the music perfectly.

I have listenned to Part II in TB2003 and now I can say that I understand it.
And I' m very happy to become reconciled with this great moment of music.
Everything has become "crystal clear" now.

What electric guitars did Mike Oldfield use when he played "Bagpipe guitars", "Piltdown Man" and "Ambient Guitars" and "The Sailor's Horn Pipe" live on the "Knebworth video"?

I have discovered the beautiful music of Tubular Bells for the second time, Since I am new to this site and also curious about the new TB version, could any of you please fill me in on changes that have been made since the original?  This is very interesting.. I remember the album that was in my parents house in the 1970's and being so suprised at its content. I am a big fan of the paranormal, and when I read the Excorcist three times of course Tubular Bells was playing in the back ground.. It definatly intensified the whole experience for me. Thank you Mr. Oldfield.

Regards,

Seravin, friend of all that is meek and unseen

I think you can't get into Part 2 because you love Part 1 so much that you want to remain loyal to it.  Just think if Tubular Bells the original was split into 17 parts like TB2003, this topic probably would not exist!

It's Psychological.

Mike Oldfield actually did have Tubular Bells 1 in 17 seperate tracks during the first master process as the 17 track names were the working titles for the seperate tracks in the two parts of Tubular Bells 1.  :)  :)
