Just returned from a trip to Reading today, and based on Mike's comments on Changeling,I did find a few places he described on the book(of course that I did check on the map before going). Pity that he didn't mention his former houses' numbers in Reading, only on Harold Wood, but at least I could feel the atmosphere of being there and so on.

First I went to Western Elms Avenue, where Mike lived when he was 3,4 years old 'til the Oldfields had moved to Harold Wood.Lovely place, with lots of trees around and so quiet.

If you go up on Western Elms Avenue, turn right and after a few steps you'll find St Edward's Prep School, one of the places he studied. With a short walk from there I went to Monks Way,where Mike lived when he was still a baby until their move to Western Elms Avenue,a very calm street full of small semidetached houses, with a wonderful view from the end of the street.

Near Monks Way you can see Elvian College(formely Presentation College),another school that Mike attended as a kid.Gosh,it's so huge...but we all know that Mike's memories from there isn't that great at all,ha ha.

It was a sunny and cold day,and of course that I took a lot of pics that I'll post somewhere for you to see. Being on all those places after reading Changeling was very special to me,because during the reading I've always imagined what they look like, and now I can get the spirit!

I really enjoyed every moment of it,and next it's a visit to Harold Wood, which every time I travel from Colchester to London(at Liverpool Street) the train passes by,but there's no calling at there.

More Tubular adventures to come soon!

Not all that far from Reading is Shipton-On-Cherwell and The Manor.Just outside Oxford.Been there many times. Now a private house.the road through Shipton runs next to what was the studio so you can sort of peek in through the windows on tip toe.

I found The Manor four years back,  on my way back from Kington, as I understand it it's now a luxury hotel. I didn't get in trouble for driving my car up the drive.

I don't know if you an drive Tati, but really to find Shipton on Cherwell you need a  car, as Bicester North or town is probably the nearest railway station (I do hate people who say "train station" :O these days, as it's always been a railway station to me).  That's about 10 miles away, Oxford is 15, but there's probably no busses running. I hate busses dirty smelly polluting things, ended up behind one in Coventry, with 2 people on it belching diesel fumes  into my car.
:O

Hi Tati, it must be grand visiting all the areas Mike lived in growing up! I try to visualise some of them! Visiting would be a way of really "feeling" the spirit of the places. Post some pics if you can! Deb

I’ve always been intrigued by The Beacon. I’ve never been there but for some reason I feel a special vibe about the place. I suppose it must be because Ommadawn, my favourite MO piece, was done there.

Yeah, please post some of those pics, Tati. We’d love to see them!

About going to other tubular places like The Beacon,Hergest Ridge,Old Down Country Park,The Manor...I need to rent a car to go there(maybe a Tubular UK fan gathering sometime?),at least my driver's license from Brazil allows me to drive here in the UK,better get used to drive the other way round, but if Mike can do it when he's living outside England, why not me?

But most of those places are better to visit during spring or summer,so,there's plenty of time to do it so!

Thanks for posting those. Great to see you! I only just finished reading Changeling a month ago so I remember the names of all those places. I wasn't expecting Monks Way to be quite so green and leafy!     :)

And yes, a visit to The Beacon and Hergest Ridge would be fun! I agree - definitely leave it until late spring or summer when the English weather is a bit more clement…
