Who had the first post? When & how did it all begin? Those that have been around a while, do you think the overall feel of the site has changed through the years. Obviously we are talking about the same Mike Oldfield and his music but have the discussions altered or are they basically the same questions rephrased?

I've been around for a couple of years and have found many of the subjects fascinating...feel I'm learning about new stuff all the time, or things I'd always wondered about & then realised other people felt the same way. There are some great characters here, a lot of humour and differences of opinion too, all quite healthy in my view. As Mike's music evolves the essence of the site does too. In many years time, if all this e-info is available to study ( how long does it all stay around - indefinitely?), I think it will make great reading and show how inspiring a musician, and how well loved a composer, Mike is. Poor old Beethoven didn't have that!!

Just bumping this thread since there haven't been any knowledgeable replies yet. I had been looking forward to seeing some replies to Bee's question as I was also interested

It would also be useful to know a bit about how tubular.net is funded and run. The admins do a lot of work which isn't necessarily fully appreciated. Maybe a short section in the FAQ or something about history of tubular.net and how it is currently operating?

I had a quick look on archive.org. The earliest version of the site I could see there was from Aug 2000. News was rumours of a European tour early in 2001. Always optimistic aren't we ;)

The "members" section of tubular.net shows all members and can be ordered by join date. First two members were in November 1999,
Olivier and Blue Dolphin both of whom seem to be around still. Anything either of you can add to this thread about the early days of tubular.net?

Please?

I'm so glad :D I happened to stumble across these forums quite by chance, when I was looking for some info about Mike's works.  I always thought  Mike was about 25 when he made/released Tubular Bells not a teenager/ just turned 20. I've made many friends on here, and Avellaina also introduced me to Myspace, where I met the Love of my Life      :D . His idea of happiness as is mine is cuddling on the sofa watching a Pink Floyd or Queen DVD/video, or watching the fish in my aquarium whils listening to Tubular Bells or Ommadawn    :D .

If it wasn't for this topic I wouldn't have realised it was 5 years ago that I first joined this board, then under the nickname Jael.
Just looked up my first post: April 29 2002, 09:06
Guess I got something to celebrate tomorrow.  :D

I'd come across this board a few times since my MO Addiction began circa 2004/05, and I never thought to join until my AS Level Exam Revision began to get on top of me. Now, my A2 Level Exam Revision is beginning to get on top of me, and I need some of MO's help once again...

Looking forward to the release of Changeling in about 5 hours!

when i joined, it was when our school had just gotten my upper sixth year our own computer room away from the junior school for us to "study" for our A levels, and at the time i had always used tubular as a referance, then i got the internet at home and joined up as jonnyw, soon after regretting that, because I wished I had used a more imaginative name!

If it wasnt for this site i dont know what would be like today, ive met four people in particular who changed my life! you know who you are!

Thank you tubular and all its lovely moderators! :D

Strange sometimes how things pan out. I haven't met many of you , but I've also exchanged music and other gifts with some of  you.     I've added some TubularBoard friends as Myspace friends too.  Thank You Avellaina for introducing me to Myspace too, met friends kindred spirits  both near and further afield :), not forgetting the wonderful Ian:D  , as mentioned above, just a pity I'm here and he's in Warwickshire.

hey thanks captain cavern! I never knew Olivier had an archive of his older web lay out. I remember in the very first beginning of tubular.net Olivier had that Oldfield "Exposed guitar pose" picture as his background. Later it became that TB3 bell.

It's funny though, I never remembered being the second (after Olivier, who of course is the owner of the forum) to join the forums.

But for further issues regarding the history of the site, you should ask Olivier.

I'm fairly sure tubular.net was amongst the first sites I visited on the internet, using dial-up from a local library. I'm pretty sure that the site has been around for a good bit longer than the forums though, but... yes, I signed up pretty soon after they appeared and I'm still here (after a long break due to university and associated activities).

well hats off to the people who run this site and may it keep going for many more years

Tubular.net was not the first Oldfield site I came across but I still think it's the best, was certainly the first to have a fans music section and I loved and still love logging on and seeing all the cool videos and music you talented peep's make.

so to one and all
Thanks.

I think the first site I joined was one where they talked about Astrology and Science Fiction and all that stuff, and seemed to have a lot less to do with Mike, does anyone remember that forum? Then I found tubularnet and have been here ever since. I joined on April 8th, 2004 and I think the first member I got to know was Tati. I have found a few people from Dark Star that I use to pen-pal with back in the pen and paper days in the early 90's including Peter Evans, Ian (too) Braidwood, and Mark Slattery (Marky) and Malcolm Stoddart (tubtattoo). I haven't been around much lately because of my You Tube obsession but I still love this place. Best M.O. site there is.

The tubular.net domain was created on September 26th, 1998.

You can check the news archive at http://tubular.net/archives/

I remember I was inspired by http://macintouch.com/ when I introduced the news section. It's now something very common, with blogs and all of that, but was not in 1999. The first news items were not linked to the forums at first and had no date.

The site was called TubularWeb during a few years, as you can see on this archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20000826220756/http://tubular.net/ (warning: this page exposes The Millennium Bell cover). There was an old layout before this one, but I don't keep archives and archive.org doesn't seem to have it.
