Hi, I've got two general questions about MIDI:

1. How do I get a software sequencer, say Cubase, to control a software synthesizer, like Reaktor? I turn the sequencer's output to "MPU410" (or something a lot like that) and the synth's input to the same, but the sequencer always turns itself back to something else.

2. How do I synchronize a hardware sequencer (which is part of a digital synth) with my computer? When I record something on the hardsynth, it is always out of synch with anything I do directly on the computer. I know the MIDI clocks can be set to "internal" and "external", but fiddling around with that doesn't seem to have helped so far.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Holger

For 1., you will need some MIDI loopback driver, that adds a virtual MIDI port to your PC (assuming you don't have a Mac or Atari ;) ), which you then can specify as MIDI output for your sequencing software and as input for your virtual synth. See e.g. MIDI-Yoke or similar in this MIDI-OX forum article

I'm using the Maple one now, and it does exactly what I wanted, so again, thanks for solving this issue so thoroughly.  :)

You're welcome...
I've been occcasionally fiddling around with my olde Yamaha SW60XG-ISA synth card for some years, facing the same problem of hooking together external MIDI keyboard, sequencing and voice editing software and the card's MID input. I started with the old 'Hubi's' loopback device and virtual MIDI cable, but had to find something new when upgrading from Win98 to XP.

Can't Reaktor run as a VST plugin?

If the hardware sequencer is the M1, synching that up will be a case of using MIDI Clock, as it won't respond to the more recent MIDI Time Code/Machine Control signals. It should be as simple as setting Cubase to transmit and the M1 to receive (that would be, setting Cubase to work off its internal clock, the M1 to the exteral clock signal coming from Cubase, and making sure Cubase is set up to transmit MIDI Clock, which is an option you'll find in a manue somewhere or other - sorry, it's ages since I used Cubase! ). The MIDI Clock Start/Stop/Continue messages which Cubase ought to transmit should then see to controlling the external sequencer...of course, those well known laws of the world probably mean it won't be that simple, but that's the basic idea.

Yes, that's basically what I tried  :) It is indeed the M1, and somehow I can't get it to recognize the transmitted signal. After using the virtual MIDI cable that a_r_schulz recommended, though, I'm wondering whether I'll actually use the M1's sequencer at all any more, as it's not the most convenient thing in the world. Still, thanks for the input, as it should come in handy at other times in the future.
