I am sorry that this poll is not a Mike Oldfield related one but what do you think of U2's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb album?  I think it is very good in my honest opinion.

To me it's very much like the Joshua tree album in that there are some tracks that i really do like but most are a dull blur and if I had the CD I would have to skip half of it probably!  :/

1. I have been a fan of U2's since pre-adolescent times (in fact, I credit singing along with Zooropa's "Lemon" with helping me preserve my falsetto range).

2. I have travelled to Ireland to see the band perform.

3. The Edge has been the single most influential guitar player to me, to this day, strangely enough.

4. It took me years to get Bono out of my singing voice. I'm sure he's still back there somewhere, though.

All that being said, I actually think the new album sucks monkey balls. It's a collection of songs where the band's on autopilot, with the same recycled bridge section popping up all over the place (this is different from MO's recycling themes and motifs, because those are deliberate, as opposed to... lazy), a horribly pretentious and unfunny album title, an equally disastrous album cover, and some of the most uninspired and uninspiring music the band has ever produced. Oh right, take a look at how many producers were involved in the project. It's pretty sick.

It's really sad for me, actually. This is a band that threw caution to the wind in the 1990s and came up with Achtung Baby!, Zooropa, and the wonderful ambient collaboration with Brian Eno, Passengers. I suppose it's kind of what's happened to a lot of musicians as they get older, the creative spark and the urgency just isn't quite there anymore.

Sorry for the negativity.

While not sharing ktran's negativity, I honestly cannot say that this album goes amongst U2's best works. In fact, they almost sound like they're ripping off themselves - to me HTDAAB sounds very much like All that you can't leave behind with a new cover and a new track order. :) Which is not necessarily a totally bad thing, but I'd be inclined to expect a little bit of originality from a band who's around since 25+ years... without reaching the extremes of PoP. ;)

Well, to me it was not very much so... I consider it to be a bit too extreme as a "detour", for a band like U2, from the kind of music they made in Achtung Baby and Zooropa, which are my favourite albums of them. ;)

It took me a loooonnnnngggg time to get into it, mainly because the kids took off with it and I was focused on other things, anyway. It appeared a couple months back, and I am blown away by some of the lyrics. Lessee.... favorites...."Miracle Drug," "Original of the Species," "Man and a Woman," and "One Step Closer." And yeah..."Vertigo." How does one stand/sit still for that one?? :)

Yeah, Miracle Drug has the great lyric:

'I want to trip inside your head
To hear the things you haven't said
And see what you might see'

BTW: I got the same favourite songs as you, and also
Love and Peace, Or Else...

Average...

The best was Achtung Baby/Zooropa followed by the fantastic Zoo TV Tour...

Great album I'm getting really keener in, I go up and down Madrid underground with its songs shuffling in my blue mp3player, amazed by 'Miracle Drug', 'One Step Closer', 'A Man and a Woman' and 'City of Blinding Lights'.

As good as 'All That You Can't' and better than 'Achtung' and the rest of the nineties in my opinion.

'Joshua' is the TB of U2 ;)

Slaointe!!! :p

I took a very long time to finally listen to this album, and I haven't had enough patience to sit through it too many times. I have to say, though, I'm quite a modest detractor of everything U2 did after Rattle and Hum, and I honestly think they only put out about at best ten songs I'd listen to repeatedly (So Cruel, Miss Sarajevo, Stay, umm... there might be more). So, this new album is pretty much more of the same to me. At least, at least, it doesn't have anything that's nearly as atrocious and mind-numbingly horrible as Elevation or Peace on Earth... City of Blinding Lights is quite catchy, but Vertigo... that'll forever be just an iPod jingle to me.
