When I have been listening to "Tubular Bells" and "Hergest Ridge" I have discovered some unusual sounds that sound like they could only be produced by instruments that are not listed in the booklets (synthersisers mabye? or a guitar with a tremelo arm such as the Strat?).

Below is an example from each of the albums mentioned above:-

1)  I can also hear a "pitch bend" sound behind the guitars in the final minute of the "Thunderstorm" in "Hergest Ridge part 2" in between the times 14:41 and 15:10 were it is fairly easy to hear.  After 15:10 it takes more of a "backseat" role to the "Thunderstorm".

2)  In "Guitars sounding like bagpipes" from "Tubular Bells 1 part 2" I can also hear some "screaming" sounds behind the overdubed section between the times 11:05 and 11:41.

Does anyone know how Mike Oldfield achieved those sounds without using synthersisers?  :)  :)

I could have sworn there was something in the discography about the Hergest Ridge sound already, but it's not there!

Anyway, I'm fairly certain the guitar there has been recorded to tape, and someone is scrubbing the reels backwards and forwards to get that sound. You can hear the direction changing at the beginnings of notes.

I say this from memory without having listened to Tubular Bells for a while, but I think the sound you're thinking of in the bagpipe guitars section is a double speed distorted guitar (not to be confused with a distorted double speed guitar - accept no cheap imitations).

That proves my mental theory that Mike Oldfield's screaming guitar is so "human like".  Thankyou Korgscrew.  :)  :)
