Hello all!
Last monday Terry Oldfield and his wife Soraya Saraswati gave a concert in a church in Amsterdam. By pure coincidence I stumbled on the event on internet a month ago, and immediately got hold of some tickets.
Well, it was a beautiful place this church, but unfortunately there weren't so many people (maybe about 60/70). I thought this was quite a shame, since Terry is well known for his works. Maybe the promotion wasn't that great. Anyway, the concert was really wonderful! Terry had about 5 flutes next to him, an Apple laptop for the recorded parts that weren't playable live, a digeridoo and some percussion. His wife also had some percussion and an Indian guitar. They played mostly material from their latest album "Forever One", which is an amazing album!
The concert was really all about spirituality, with many people meditating during the concert. Soraya is a meditating teacher, so she sang some poets during the concert. Terry and Soraya also gave a meditating class the day before, which I didn't visit.
The good thing about a small concert is that you can talk with the artist. So I approached Terry and asked him about the software he was using, and commenting on his beautiful version of "She moved through the fair" which he played on flute, the one Mike also played on "Voyager". During the concert he mentioned his mother's dead and that he also was proud of having Irish blood in him, and the song was a tribute to his mother. Afterwards he gave me an autograph and we shook hands and gave me a big smile! Really nice man!!
I also talked to their soundman, who turned out to be from Belgium. He knew the couple for a while and he told me something new! He said Terry did some stand-in work for Mike during his panic attack period, right after his succes with Tubular Bells. He was a stand in for some photographs for magazines and he even gave interviews to people on the phone, pretending to be Mike!!
He also said that Terry visited Mike at his home in the UK last year, and Terry commenting: "He's doing much better now. He even offered me a cup of tea!"
There were some photos made, I hope I can upload some if I can get them!
