How do people feel about the use of synthetic vocals? Will we one day have a synthetic Mike?  :O

I like them but it would be great if he used some real vocals too. I hope he will make a album with some vocals songs. Maybe 5 vocal songs with different artist, maybe maggie or the voice from man in the rain. (heather?)
And if he did some short songs (maybe one funny one) And some instrumentals with more lenght. He could take them together and make a complex song.
But this Light and shade album is great for me. I like it very much. I play it all day and just love it.
;)

vocaloid is very simple to use, and the result can be better than what you can listen on light&shade. it's a question of time, and it seems to me that mike has recorded the album running too much.

vocaloids anything but easy to use, however the free demo tracks provided when you buy the software sound better than the ones used in L&S

But to answer the original question, yes i do like them

Um, I'd like to rephrase my answer... they suck. I like electronic music a lot, but these vocals... they're just not good.

(this is, in case the plastic chants in Resolution are an example)

My mum thought they were ok until I told her it was software not a real person!

I like them actually, I think people dislike it because they don't like Mike using all the technology but if you concentrate on the sound alone. They sound great IMO  :)

I love 'em. As I said somewhere else, I love 'em for the very fact that they're synthetic. :D

There's no way Vocaloid could replace professional singers and it would be totally useless to singer songwriters like Aimee Mann or David Gray, but I can see how it would be good for Mike.

I was listening to Resolution just now and I'd have no idea how to tell a singer to do that. Then of course, there's finding a singer who could and would put herself through it.

I think they're quite limited, but useful.

The vocaloid voices are absolutely not realistic at all...

If I hadn't been told I would have thought that it was a human voice going through some special effect, as in Cher's "Believe", but different.

And I would have thought: "wow, Mike Oldfield can alter a human voice in a way I've never heard before, that's amazing the way he can use the technology to make his very own sound!"

And then someone would tell me "hehe it's not a human, it's one of this crappy talking software on which you can assign notes to make a song" and I would say: "wow, now this really sucks (what? my balls)!"

  LOL

My vacuum cleaner really sucks too

I must admit before hearing the Vocaloid voices I was a bit skeptical, but having heard L&S they're not as bad as I thought they would be,

I voted for the option "I like them but bring back Maggie etc"  :)

I'm very much into them. I even like the fact that they don't sound as perfect as they maybe could. This is a pioneering work. I appreciate the oddities that appear in the process. One day in the future, someone will try very hard to reproduce that sound with the state-of-the-art singing software of the year 2112. ;)

I very much agree that this is pioneering work, and I also personally get the impression that the album has been... composed around the first usage of the 'tool'.

I don't mind them at all. I agree that a real singer would probably be better in most cases, but the vocaloids don't creep me out or make me want to set fire to the CD or anything like that.

It's not Vocaloid mates, it's Cantor. Cantor is a better singer yet  :D

I agree! Oops, better not.

Anyway, I am amazed by the realism of certain effects. For example the choir boy effect on 'The Gate'. I really enjoy the use of vocoloid/cantor and it doesn't tire  :)

The only problem I have with the vocaloids is that they are not articulate, whether real or not, I can't stand it when someone is singing a song and you cannot understand what they are trying to say, if the words are not relevent then don't have any! I think the vocaloids on Mikes album suit most of the songs and I like them in 'the Gate' and all the other tracks except for the 'gurgling' sound of the wailing in Resolution, would have worked better with a real voice. The words in 'Surfing' are too hard to understand and the low voice that says 'Slipstream' gives me the irrits as well. I like the deeper voice in the background in 'Surfing', sounds like the caveman come to pay us a visit.

I have the exact same problem with badly articulated lyrics. Exact same opinion, but I couldn't write it this way.
