I voted for Mike - He was not even in the list so I had to write his name in the 'others' box! Some of the names in the list I have never heard of, why was Mike left out?

Well, true masters are rarely recognized in their generation!

As an only mildly relevant addition, Virgin Radio has nothing to do with Virgin Records, with them both having been sold by Richard Branson...this could be why the radio station in particular feels little obligation towards Mike (but then, I think it goes further than that...).

The best thing to do is for everyone to vote for Mike, to show that he is still popular (and if all of his fans voting for him doesn't bring him into the top 100, we can maybe conclude that he was left out because they felt he wasn't popular enough...).

I'm sorry - I should have indicated that your post had been edited. The new topic you began was almost identical to this one (which had been started two days before you made your post). Rather than completely deleting it, I chose to merge your topic into this one, so that the part you'd written was still available for everyone to read (if I'm not mistaken, the section I removed was simply a duplication of mikeoldfield.org's newswire message, which many of this board's readers may have seen already).
If you feel that my editing of your post has in any way distorted what you wanted to say, please let me know (and indeed, if you want to edit your post, you're more than welcome to). Please accept my apologies if this has caused any annoyance to you.

You can see the results of the vote on Virgin Radio's website. Mike Oldfield, however, doesn't appear on the list.

Hm... how can this be? I can't help wondering if they left him out on purpose. Since Mike doesn't even appear among the artists on the site, maybe they were too lazy to add a presentation of his albums, like all the other artists have. *sigh*

Well, well... better luck next time :-)

Oddly enough, they do have a page for him, but there seems to be no link to it - Olivier found it through guesswork. I get the feeling he's just not 'fashionable' enough for them...shame...

What's more important is that Tubular Bells got in to the BBC chart of the best British music. Mike is not a showy or hip artist but his music speaks for him. It's his music that deserves the recognition.

An interesting comparision is that Mike is doing great at Esprit - http://eil.com
Right now, he's #12 among the 150 best selling artists!! (no voting here). Queen (winner of the Virgin Radio voting competition) is #6. Nice to see that there are so many MO collectors out there =)

Keep buying MO rarities! :-)

Mind you i read the list of the top 100 and there were a lot of strange ones. Its very predictable in these votes for a lot of recent bands to appear. 30 years down the line and most ppl will not have heard of many of the best selling bands around at the moment. But i was amazed to see the likes of Steve Harley and a few others there in the list. Mind you i was a great fan of Steve Harley but i wounldn't have thought he would have had the following, 30 years later to get in a list like this. Fleetwood Mac is also another strange one. I thought they were excluding "Foreign Artists". Whilst the Peter Green days of FM might have warranted inclusion i would think that because the main trust of the band is American, they would have been excluded. After all 2 members of U2, to the best of my knowledge, were born in England. These polls should generally be given a wide birth as the dont represent the majority of the public. To me the most influential musician is deffo MO. But then thats a personal thing. Mind you being a huge "Freddie" fan i was delighted to see Queen at no 1.
