I just bought the double album, 2005 version, remixed, remastered etc, for $20. Have always wanted it, was waiting to download it on WinMX which is no more. Had never heard it in full before, a little slow in parts but I had no idea how many people featured on it, David Essex, Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues, Philip Lynott from Thin Lizzy and Chris Thompson from Manfred Manns Earthband. I assume this is the same Chris Thompson that sang on Earth Moving, I had no idea he was from MM and was the same guy who did 'Blinded by the Light', love that song. The annoying thing is that they listed 26 artists that Chris has worked with, including Britney Spears, and yet no mention of Mike Oldfield. WHY???????

Stupid question: The album came out in 1978 but there was no actual movie at that time was there? Didn't the movie come out in the 1950's, so this music has never actually been used as a 'soundtrack' to a movie before?

Let's be extra careful with how this "War of the Worlds" tour is announced. We don't want someone to take it too seriously and start to shoot water towers. :)

Didn't know there was remixed 2005 version of War of the Worlds. Will sure buy the CD if I find it. I have now only the compressed part on 1 CD.

And your question: there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

Having said that: I bought the original LP as soon as it came out (but was it 1978, can't remember). No, this was not a soundtrack for any movie what so ever. It was a original new piece of marvelous music based upon the work of HG Wells. I loved the music back then, and still love it very much.

I sure hope that Mike realises what joy he brings to us !

Thinking of going, could be quite a laugh as much as anything else. Tickets are £40 for the Glasgow concert though, Ouch!

Presumably this sudden re-interest in Wayne's masterwork has all been generated via the success of the latest movie on the subject. Or have I missed something?

Yeah its pretty much because of the movie. Although I was quite suprised to learn that Jeff Wayne actually holds the world wide artistic rights to The War of the Worlds and Seven Spielberg and co actually had to ask his permission to make the movie. Jeff Wayne agreed but only on the grounds that they dropped the 'The' from the title. Thats why Spielbergs version is simply 'War of the Worlds'. The reason? Aparantly Wayne has a full CGI movie of his own in the works to go with his music. Should be good.

WOW! That is interesting but if Jeff is really doing a new movie it seems ridiculous at this point in time and the music from 1978, no matter how good, is going to sound somewhat dated.

I have seen the new movie but can't remember if it had any decent musical background?!

How can anyone hold copyrights of any kind on "War of the Worlds"? The author is so long dead. Does anyone know how this works?

Well presumably there is an estate of H.G Wells somewhere, he's not that long dead after all, there still must be reletives alive. I think I read that Jeff Wayne's agreement involves some sort of control over the publishing rights of any adaptation of the book, so basically Spielberg had to come to him to ask permission to use the name I guess.

Jeff Waynes '78 version has been a regular on my Hi-Fi, and I had heard something about a re-release to co-incide with the film. Well, if some Hollywood bloke is going to spend a few million dollars on adverts, why not take advantage?

The LP version had a glorious booklet with some great pictures. If Jeff has put an animated film together, it would be so much better than that Tom Cruise nonsense.

Even though the music is nearly 30 years old, it stands the test of time.

Oh, doesn't copyright exist for 50 or 80 years after the authors death? And presumably resides in the authors estate.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

I have always loved Jeff Waynes rendition. My children grew up listening to cassette tapes I made off my "Master Edition" LP's. I bought this as soon as I heard it. In fact I'd play the tapes when my kids and I would take long trips. The "OooooLaaaa" parts used to terrify my youngest son (now 18 years old). Ahh the memories...

Always wanted to go to Scotland, maybe this would be a great excuse to go. I have lots of old family there.... Hmmmmm.......

The booklet with the 2005 cd release is quite detailed, 47 pages. I guess most of it is the same as in the original booklet, it is full of original drawings and paintings. Has ALL the words, spoken and sung, and pictures of all the players with up to date biographies. And an advert for The Definitive version of The War of the Worlds (Collectors Edition), mixed in stereo and 5.1 surround sound, 1CD of the best remixes from 1979-2005, 3 CDs of rarities, including never before heard material from Richard Burton, Phil Lynott, David Essex, and Justin Hayward. In-depth DVD 'making of' documentary featuring NEW interviews with Jeff Wayne, PLUS never before seen CGI footage. 12"X12" hardback presentation book and deluxe packaging with 80 page full colour collector's presentation book.

And an email address: www.thewaroftheworlds.com
