It's a pity that Mike has never tried to play properly the Chapman Stick(remember Carrie Melborne from TB III concert)....

I hear Sitar in both Amarok och Islands (Wind Chimes pt2 and Flying Start). But perhaps that is a sitar sound from a keyboard?

Tablas are present in Four Winds even if they are "synthetic".

We don't want Mike to play the Chapman Stick, we want to see more of the lovely Miss Melborne ;)

Harpsichord? Mellotron? The mellotron was obligatory in 70s prog, but I don't think I've heard one on an Oldfield album. When it came to keyboards Mike always made original choices; the Soling string machine, Farfisa organs and that Roland synthesizer which noone else used. I think it's part of the originality of those early records.

Yeah, I was going to say, violin is a fairly obvious omission from most of his stuff.

Of course there's drums in his music, but I don't think Mike ever played a drumpart in the way that simon does, with playing a beat and breaks etc. He's done lot's of percussion things, but I don't think he's done the usual drums.

Also I'm happy there's not a lot saxophone in his music

There's clearly a distinct lack of gamelan in Mike's recordings. :-)

There's a whole string section on several of his records. Plus he hired Simon House to play violin on one of his tours - can't remember which one.

It depends whether the thre thread refers to instruments Mike has never used or whether it refers to instruments Mike never plays - there is a difference.

I might be wrong but I think that Harpsichord may fall into both categories.

@ Baggiesfaninessex: There's a harpsichord (or a spinet maybe, which sounds very like a harpsichord, anyway! :D - played by Mike) in Ommadawn part 1, heard in the slow section after the folky one. This section is known as "Birdsong" in the Amarok Player. For those who don't have this piece of software (or have no idea about what it is :)) this section starts at 8'18''.

Apart from this, I agree with the above - to be really specific in this thread, we'd have to distinguish between the instruments that Mike doesn't play and the ones that are not present in his music. If we were to limit ourselves to the former, I'd say that real drums, wind instruments (except maybe for the Northumbrian bagpipes) and bowed strings in general are out of Mike's reach. :)

@ Jonnyw & Morti: He does play country fiddle. You can listen to him playing the fiddle on "Sailor's hornpipe" and "Moonshine", even if in this latter piece the fast fiddle solo parts are most probably a synth. :D

@ Korkesova: There is a contrabass in TB (1973). Not played by Mike. :)
