As nearly all of the people that use this site are old enough to legally drink alcohol, I wish to ask:

What is it about alcohol that everyone thinks is so great?

I really don't get it, people go out with the purpose of getting drunk, why get drunk? I don't particularly like the taste of alcohol but without that bias, I still don't understand  :/

You know, I've often wondered the same thing. I'm just about the only person I know of in my university course who hasn't ever been drunk (I've never even touched alcohol, and I've been 18 for 3 months), and I do wonder what the point is.

Being drunk has never been any fun at all in my experience, and alcohol in itself is of little use. But there are certain alcohol-based experiences that are among the finest life can offer. One, for instance, would be sitting with good company on a winter's evening sharing one or two drams of a good single malt whisky. The complexity of the flavours, the feeling of fellowship, and the heart-warming glow that is set up with only a few sips are like nothing else I know.

At the other end of the scale, how about sitting outside on a warm summer evening watching an outdoor Shakespeare production as the sun goes down, sipping a glass of good red wine? Or a pint of good draught beer after a hard day's physical work or a long hot walk?

That's what the point is (for me).

Many people use it as an escape.  I, however, drink a beer every now and then because I love the taste.  I prefer an imported, premium beer like Amstel Light.  And it's got to be icy cold.  Mmm...mmm...good.

Perhaps it's an acquired taste. For long time, I've really hated most alcohol-based drinks, including beer and whisky. But recently, I've discovered how enjoyable they can be - and also how awful beer can be in excess. I have a theory that alcohol, instead of going down to your tummy, goes UP to your skull. So after enough drinks, your brain starts to float. That's just the way I felt after excessive drinking. :)

Still, I highly prefer maté.

Hm........  :/

i really dont know...
But i love red wine and ouzo. beer is heaven too, but this "get drunk thing" isnt me. Im never drunk, i hate it. You loose your control and can even make talk.
But many times it can be too much but just drink alot of water and you have control...  :)  I love chile red wine, and all the rioja wine of course! Good and sweet german white wine is perfect in the summer time.
Nothing is better in the fall when the storms is comming and sit down and watch Tubular bells II concert from edinburg and drink red wine  :D

Yes, of course I understand that not everyone drinks to get drunk; perhaps my question should have been "what's the point of getting smashed out of your brain?" Over the year lots of my mates have had their 18th birthday, and all of them seem to want to instantly go down to the tavern and drink five or six or more beers. I just don't see the attraction. The same applies with smoking, don't get me started on that...  ;)

I'm 22 and some months over, and I've never drank alcohol, except for once sip of champagne once at a friend's graduation party (because I didn't want to make a fuzz about wanting something non-alcoholic).

I admit that my total abstination is due to my genes: both my mother and father have / have had serious drinking problems during their lives, and I fear that if I ever start, I'll get as badly addicted as they did. And I don't want to drink my job and end up not being able to get a new one, thank you very much.

As a smoker and a drinker I advise that if you don't see the point then fine, don't do 'em!  Stay clean, healthy and drug free, kids.  :-)

I'm off down the pub now.  See - I can't help myself!

I never had any alcohol till I was about 24, when I went to Prague and discovered hot wine was: 1. cheap, 2. delicious, 3. hot (it was December, you know). This was the first time I have ever enjoyed any alcoholic drink. I now really like wine and beer, especially Guinness. I really like the taste, the more bitter, the better :) to think I used to hate beer for its bitterness... Also, after one or two beers I find it much easier to enjoy myself (I'm a rather tense and reserved person...)

I don't get alcohol either. The "high" isn't interesting. Basically it's just a false feeling of happiness... I want something else from my drugs. Also, it makes me stupid and strangles my creativity.

And that's when I'm only slightly drunk. I've actually never been deeper in the bottle. Didn't like what I felt thus far and stopped drinking.

I'd have nothing against trying other substances though... at least once.

The drinking of alcohol is a social and relaxing activity. I think you over emphasise the "getting drunk" aspect. Many people I know and socialise with don't get drunk to socially unacceptable levels, hammered or smashed. Yet they enjoy drinking alcohol at social gatherings whether at a family party or with friends down the pub. I also have friends who do not drink alcohol at all but they don't question why those of us who do, do drink and I don't question them as to why they don't. It's simply a matter of personal choice and preference and there is no mystery whatsoever in the drinking of alcohol.

There are similarities with smoking and caffiene. I occasionally have a 10 day detox period where I don't drink alcohol or coffee amongst other things and I must say that my body craves the caffiene more than the alcohol. Caffiene withdrawal is amongst the most horrible feelings I have ever encountered and I have vastly reduced my intake as a result. Food for thought.

That makes sense if one enjoys the taste of alcohol. Otherwise another drink would do as well.

Also, I claim there's no such thing as caffeine withdrawal. I drank lots of energy drinks one period, but didn't notice anything when I stopped.

Not for you perhaps, but it does exist for most folk.  ;)

Read here. There are many more places this is documented but this will do. Think I'll go get a mug of decaf now!

caffine is a sly bugger! it's not thought of as a drug in relative terms, but it does have an effect on the body that once its stopped the body "wants" it, through choice i gave up smoking 3 1/2 months ago, i feel fantastic because of it, so i thought id cut down on beer and tea and coffee, beer wasnt a problem, i only drank alot of the time because i was bored, plus the association of drink and smoking had to be broken, so that was ok but i did notice that if i didnt have a cup oy coffee at a time when i usually would, i would end up thinking about it, i found that rather odd! so now i have a few cups in the day, but replaced some of the other times with water or fruit juice, although i think im becoming addicted to cranberrys! nevermind eh  ;)
